Road Trip

Because of gas prices we will take a short vacation this week. We are hitting the road, driving up for a couple of days of R and R and shopping/eating.

Now we are just hoping that the weather will be holding up and no showers. We will be making our usual stops of Matfield Green and eating on the road somewhere. We are going to see that beautiful NCAA championship trophy. We are taking an "official campus visit," with S on Wednesday. The university will tell us all about traditions; hopefully some ways to save for college; and a walking tour of the campus. It will be interesting to see the buildings or things that we don't know (whatever that could be!)

It will be nice just to get away even though it's only for a couple of days. No breakfast to cook, or lunch, or dinner. Ahhh...a very relaxing vacation. Although, I wish it would be in Oregon instead.

We will have to leave PLENTY of food for Sasha, he eats so much. Then the dog will probably bark to death. He will have a nice view of his igloo. Hopefully he won't play Houdini when we are gone. I would "hate" that...very big fine to pay I am sure. If we were to go to the NW then we would hire someone to watch the "animal children."

Take care of flute...she will be swamped with activities. Maybe I'll send a postcard to her (and beat it home) . Wish you were Here... :)

Cookbook Corrections part 2

Today while checking my box at church, the church lady who called me to corrected her recipe(s) put in ANOTHER correction.

Well...I thought I KNOW I did this right. So I got home and checked the hard copy that she sent me and compared it to what I typed. I DID make a mistake (just one). On her copy she had put "1 can french sliced green beans." I typed (duh!) "1 can fresh sliced green beans." On her hard copy she had put "round snack crackers," and to bake it for 30 minutes at 350 degrees." That's all she wrote. No mention of anything else.

Okay here is the "official" corrections on this recipe: 1 can french style green beans, 1 roll of Ritz Crackers (no other snack crackers). Then she explains more how to get the crackers crushed, etc. Bake at 40 minutes at 325 degrees." Use Ritz Crackers only! Then she adds: Serves 10. There was no mention about servings on the first copy!

It would be helpful if before the author who sent in this recipe would have gone through it thoroughly because the "typist" might have put it the way she wanted it BEFORE it went to press! The recipe was typed as is, with the except of the fresh sliced as opposed to french sliced (as she had in her first hard copy) and french style (in the second copy).

I don't mean to do these recipes incorrect and especially to hers. But it happens. As the song by John Mayer says, "Say what you mean to say."

Spider Stomp

When the kids were younger we used to take them to Chuck E. Cheese in Wichita or Portland. A favorite game that we used to play while there was "Spider Stomp." We would put our tokens in and the little red buttons on the floor would light up. Often I would help the kids play this so that they could get 100% of the lights (or Spiders) stomped on so more tickets would come out of the machine. This way they could get a price at the end of the time we were there. Oh, I miss those days!

Fast forward to this afternoon while I was cleaning the church today. We were there today because we won't be there in the middle of the week. We will be taking a short vacation and Chuck E. Cheese is not on our scheduled anymore. But there was a lot of spiders hanging out at church.

I took the advice that flute gave me this morning and began stomping on the spiders. This time I was wearing my tennis shoes and felt more confident wearing those than the sandals. Spiders for some reasons, must be attract to the men's bathroom. Anyway, this is where I saw the majority of the little brown things. If I couldn't stomp on them then I would spray them down with scrubbing bubbles and try to flush them down. Nope. That didn't do it. They would crawl right out of the drain. I mustered up some courage and squashed them with a paper towel. No screaming. Just killed them!

One little spider was hiding behind the water cooler in the foyer. I was trying to kill that with some kind of tool, but it wouldn't budge upon seeing the tool. I remembered an old "Little Rascal" short where Spanky was "bug hunting," and he took a hammer to the bugs to kill them. Then he took the "hammer" and accidentally hit Petey the dog on the head with the hammer, instead of the bug.

To get this spider out I sprayed some air freshner on him and flattened him with my shoe. I had to wipe my shoe off, but it was an effective way of killing spiders. Thanks Nikki!

Watch Where you Step

(Don't read this part if you have a weak stomach)

Upon waking up this morning, I climb the stairs to do my "daily constitution." I entered the kitchen and stepped into a gooey mess of some kind. "EWWW!!" I want my feet to quickly get off of this stuff. Then I move, only to find another mess (of the same consistency) on the same rug!! All this before I have time to do "anything." Earlier I had heard the cat meowing for some of his food. Cats, unfortunately, or maybe, fortunately do not eat what has been "pitched out." I adjust my eyes, and see that apparently the cat has "overstuffed" himself.

"MEOWW!!" he cries loudly at me.

You just can't set a cat down and say, "Well Sasha since you coughed up a hairball, or whatever, you can't have any more food." They just don't understand you very well. So I go to my service porch to get some of his not so favorite food, the hairball formula. He plods over to his bowl and sniffs it. It's not what he wants.

He lays down in the living room looking for some other living person to give him the "right" food.

"MEOWW!!" he cries at his next "victim."

"Sasha won't eat this food," explains J.

"Yeah, I know but apparently he had a hairball and hocked something up, in a couple of places. So he'll have to eat this first."

Well of course everyone feels sorry for him and by this time we are sick of his meows. We give in. Sasha wins. He gets his favorite food.

You just have to watch where you step when you own animals at all times. It just goes with the territory.

Tonight while cleaning at church, I was in the library straightening up things when I saw a little brown "thread" furiously running along. The "thread" turned out to be a spider. I immediately picked up the first book I see to stun him. No, it wasn't the book you all were thinking it was, but it was a "history book." So I thought I can't kill it with that. I slide the book and the brown spider is still alive. I take an old phone book. Slam it down. Then stomp on the book. I carefully pick it up and it's pretty much gone. After a scream and all that, I take it to it's "burial ground." Thankfully I wasn't running around barefooted or it would have been "Hello Dr. D."
-------
We went looking for eyeglass frames today. We are both needing changes of lenses. We went to one store that supposedly has a wide selection. I looked at what they had and I can remember wearing some of these back in the 70's!! In fact, in my high school senior picture, of over thirty years ago, I see the same frames for sale!! Retro frames indeed! We went to two places in the mall and one Target store. Just have to search for the right frames. Then we have to deal with the costs of getting them! Oh boy!

Hotter than a Firecracker!

Well, okay, it's not hotter than a firecracker here. If you are working out in the sun without a hat, then that statement applies here. It is pretty humid out today though.

Early today while I was working on the computer, I look out my window as I often do to see what is scampering outdoors. Often a blue jay, a squirrel, maybe even a cardinal comes in the yard. I look out and there is "Houdini" Mario the dog outside of our yard. I sound the alarms loudly yelling, "THE DOG IS OUT OF THE YARD!" I run outside barefooted, naturally angry that the little sneak is outside of the fence. I open the gate and he comes running in. Whew! But where did he escape the first place? I look out in the back and there is the gate just flipping back and forth. I try to make a run for it, but "Houdini" jumps out of the yard again! This time I am yelling, "GIT BACK HERE YOU STUPID DOG, I AM GOING TO KILL YOU." Well I guess I would run away from my owner too, if I was yelled like that. So there he goes up north in the alley to see his doggie buddies. I run out in the street still barefooted on the asphalt, pretty hard on the feet. He races south towards me, then into my neighbors yard to check on her dog. My neighbor, who always had her dogs escaping, calls to him, very sweetly. At this point in time, I am not feeling very sweetly. I reply, "It's better that he goes to you, because he'll know what I'll do." Mario looks at B, then at me and by this time L is out on the driveway, with the leash. He finally trotted towards L and he gets Mario back in to the yard.

I thank B for doing her best keeping the dog calm and me as well. Then she said, "At least your dog doesn't go downtown when he was here." That's true. But I have no idea how long "Houdini" Mario was out. I just cannot figure how he got out as the gate is locked in from the inside. Fireworks were going off all last night and this morning. Dogs often run away from the noise because they just do not understand and they are scared. I guess tonight Houdini Mario will be spending the night in his pen.
---------
This morning I get a call from one of the ladies of the church. I am thinking, "Oh she will want more cookbooks." So I picked it up. You know, next time I think I'll just let the machine get it next. When you are cookbook chairman/typist. You take all the compliments and all the errors with the job. She explained that her recipe was wrong!! And that all of her family enjoys it, that all of the relatives love it, and they cook this for funeral dinners, etc. On, on, on and on. So now I'm feeling like Mario, wanting to leave the phone and hide. I let her go on and on. Then apologize (I did say in the intro in the book, "sorry for the errors") and said I would get other errors together and print those in the bulletin.

I found the hard copy that she sent me. I admit I did miss "put the crumbs on the top." As that was in the copy. But there were no instructions on how to make this casserole. So I had to assume (and you know what people say about that word!) that you combine all the ingredients. She explained to me twice what it should have said! If it just would have been written EXACTLY I think I would have gotten it in correct. The instructions should have said "combine everything except the last two ingredients. Then put the cracker crumbs on top followed by the melted butter on top of the mixture. It didn't say that in the hard copy, so I did type it as it was written. Also I couldn't read how much it yield. So again (assuming) I put 2--15 servings, where it was actually 12-15. Two to fifteen would have covered that 12 servings. I mean, if you liked eating a lot it could stretch into 2 servings! So, I am sure that there are more weird errors out there.

Maybe I should ask people not to call me...I think I said that on the website. Just leave me a note or email me. Oh, and this person was calling long distance! Personally, I would have waited until Sunday to tell the person.
------
We've been doing some pruning at the inlaws house. That was hot!! I forgot to bring the hat, but I borrowed one. I couldn't finish my work as it was HOT and Humid.
-----
This is the first year in a long time where we didn't buy any fireworks. I guess we will just enjoy them from a distance at home. Maybe next year we will get fireworks...if we get them while we are on vacation! That will be fun! Hope everyone else is having a great holiday.

Maybe I should have been....

an orthodontist or something!

We went to see the nearby orthodontist a few miles to the east and he gave us an estimate on how much treatment would cost. Gads! I'm either going to have to go back to our original orthodontist or do a money making thing like sell the house, a book, have a HUGE garage sale, or something.

S had been going to the orthodontist in Wichita and he recommended second phase. Well, needless to say we couldn't afford it. Here we are about 3 years later and realizing that she does need treatment, but we still can't afford the down payment for the one down here. I will have to check in with our original one to see if his price is any cheaper. I do like the one down in this area better than our original one. He's a very nice man and elderberry recommended him. But it all comes down to a matter of the down payment. How to obtain it and how much one will charge over the other. Decisions, decisions!!
---------
Today we went to Wichita for a relaxing day. We all got away from Harper and that was nice! I finally got my refills from Wal-mart (the last time I'll deal with that pharmacy). It was really nice going there with very little crowd to deal with!

We then went to the west mall so S could shop and J had to stay with us as we both got eye exams. It had been 4-5 years since we went to an eye doctor. L was having trouble reading, which is not good for his job. And me, well, I have my usual eye problems, red, gritty, dry eyes.
I figured it was due to bad hygiene and I always get dirt and dust when I am mowing (which I did yesterday). L's eyes had changed and then it was my turn.

I could see pretty well in one eye, but the other eye was off. I just love it when they adjust it and I can see sooooo well and clear!! Ah!! You really can tell there is a difference when you get new lenses. Then he wanted to know if I saw any dark spots, when looking straight ahead without glasses. Nope, none....I am just pretty blind and everything is a blur without glasses. My bifocals apparently had changed too but again that is great when you can see small print and you couldn't before.

Then the health of the eye...oh boy what was he going to see?? It seems I have dry eyes because of something is wrong with my weird eyelashes. They grow in weird and when I blink it scratches my cornea. Wonderful. So I have eye lid scrubs and need to get some eye drops. He did pluck the weird eyelashes out and put in eye drops. Wow!! My eyes feel sooooo good! So next thing we both need to do is get two pair of glasses. I can't wait because I am supposed to get smaller frames and it will be much more lighter!

I am so glad that S and J do not need glasses like we do. I got my glasses when I was 9 or 10 and L didn't need them until he was 12. I think in my case, it had a whole lot to do with where I used to sit to watch TV. I would always sit really close to the TV set growing up. S and J usually sit pretty far back. They won't have to worry (cross my fingers, pray) about getting glasses until they are at least 40.
----------
4th of July....mmmm....I am thinking we will barbecue in the afternoon and do some gardening work on our house and the inlaws house. A whole lot of pruning will be taken place.
------
Cookbook sales are doing REALLY great!! Some friends at our church are getting the word out at their place of business about the cookbook. People love to collect the books and read the recipes. After all the last time our church put out a cookbook it was 20 years ago! Cookbooks are a hot item, especially of the local flavor! TY to KA for the promotion of the book! :)

Working Summer

Usually I do not spend my time out at church on Wednesday, however, I need to get my work finished (hours completed) by Friday. At least I will get some help during this time and we should get everything looking pretty good by Friday. There is a wedding to be held so we will truly have our Saturday off yeah!! Then it wil be work, work, work (Mini-Vac's line from the Jetsons) a little next week. We get to take a small vacation. Not where everyone wants to go, but nearby, somewhat. Although this isn't bad going to see the NCAA basketball trophy and walking on campus. We all wanted to see family in the NW. But that's not going to happen for another year.

It won't matter if gas next year is a lot higher than $4.00 a gallon either. We have put our NW vacation off too many years in a row. We need to meet a little cousin to S and J yet and see the rest of my family up there. So it is the NW in 2009. That seems so far away!!

We all know that the school year will go by pretty fast. It usually does. It is summer that drags when there is NOTHING to do. If we lived in the bigger town, we could at least go miniature golfing, shopping at the mall, visiting bookstores, bowling, even (if they would like to do that). Instead J and S have other entertaining things to do here. But yet I hear "I'm Bored," about once or three times a day. I encourage reading. But I don't enforce it. I encourage cleaning a bedroom, but it remains uncleaned.

When I think of summer, I think of the lazy days of doing next to nothing. When I was younger we had a hammock on the patio and I would catch up on my sleep. Also I would get a pretty red sunburn too! Not good. I think about sipping lemonade or people making sun tea on the porch (not me...I hate tea). I think of running in the cool grass (not here gotta watch out for the dog doo-doo, stickers, and mosquitos lurking around). I would read in the summer in my town and being excited when I finished. Summers weren't boring back then.

I figure with the kids being bored in the summer they will look forward to the challenges of going back to school. Then they will at least see more friends and be doing more activities.
