Birthday Twins

Yes, today is the the last day of March. The day before April Fools day. My favorite day of the year because of the birthday. I'm going out to eat and going to a movie. I'm so glad my birthday this year is on a weekend.

Over the years I have discovered I have "Birthday Twins." When I went to college my best friend's brother's birthday was also March 31st, he turns 47 today, Happy b-day Danny! Then in church we have an exchange student from Kenya. His name is Gotta T. Happy 32nd, Gotta! I just love it with I find other "Birthday Twins."

Other people born on March 31st are: Al Gore (former vice president), Gabe Kaplan (of Welcome Back Kotter Fame), Shirley Jones (lead actress in "Oklahoma" and on the Partidge Family), Christopher Walken (a dead pan actor famous for his roles in Sarah Plain and Tall series and Biloxi Blues), William Daniels (who was on St. Elsewhere and Boy Meets World), Gordie Howe (a hockey person), and musicians Herb Alpert and Joseph Haydn (who would have been 275 years old today!)....now there's a goal to obtain...longevity! Not that he did! LOL!

My kids are birthday twins and it wasn't planned either. Both of them have the same birthdays, three years apart.

So if you know any birthday twins on your birthday wish them a great birthday! :)

Next week busy week

Looking at my schedule for next week...whew! I have orthodontist appointments, dentist appointments, a birthday (again), an eighth grade parent meeting, a party for school, and many things going on at church!

I am the head of the party committee at "J" class. Originally there were four parents scheduled for the Easter party. Two of the kids have since moved. So now there is one dad and me. I've asked the teacher for some help, she said she would help me, so this is good.

For the first time, I will have to make the treat. I usually do treat bags and the game. Many of the times I have been the party committee head person and I don't mind as I get to assign people to do things. Then other times when I am not in charge I always ask them if I can do the game. This arrangement works out well. One year, someone was in charge of "S" class party and she wanted me to bring money and that was all. I wasn't working and wasn't making the "big bucks," or even the " small change" then, I was not happy at all! I like it much better when the teacher assigns who is in charge, sometimes they get it right.

So I will not only make the treat but I will get to do a game as well. My games are not the type where they do "Thumbs up 7-up," but rather mine are academic in nature. I've done "Bunny Bingo" before....twice (in first and third grade). First grade I would have them find sightwords. In third grade we did math equations. For instance if I had B 8 I would say, "B 4 x 2" and they would know to look for B 8.

This time I thought we would play team Scatergories. We have a small class of 12 so I could have several combinations of kids. So hopefully this will be a good game. Next year is my last year to do school parties and then I am done. When "S" was in school I would always get Christmas parties. With "J" it is always Easter parties.

Do you do parties for classrooms? What ideas do you use?

Changes and Choices

"S" is going to High School in August. She will have a change in location, teachers, friends, and classes. For the past 8 years she has gone to the same school. The classes are pretty much the same from sixth grade to eighth grade. No choices, no variety and same teachers.

She just got a Freshman enrollment form from the junior high counselor. Being a freshman, she is somewhat limited in what she can choose to enroll in. There are the required courses of Physical Education, a science class, a math class, an English class, and a keyboarding class. Then there are the "choices," and even that is limited, in my opinion. This is a small high school, yet as freshmen, the students cannot take journalism course, unless they get a permission from the teacher. The students are offered Home Economics (Basic Sewing), Ag. Education, Technology, Debate, Forensics, two Art classes, three social studies classes, one foreign language class, and three music classes. Not too many choices. I would like to see more journalism classes and at least a drama class and more social studies classes.

So now she is pouring over the application form frustrated by the choices. I have offered my opinion (remembering my high school years, or that is trying to remember my high school years. LOL!) what courses to take.

When I was a freshman, I was still in junior high. I went to a larger junior high than "S" and we had our choices. Shop for the guys and Home Ec for the girls. So when I was in 9th grade I took Cooking, Band, Orchestra, a Math class, English, Science classes, compromising of Chemistry, Rock Science, Biology, and Physics, PE, and a social studies class. There wasn't much choices there as I remember, but there were art classes offered and there was no way I would take art. Ick.

But times have changed. I am sure glad I don't have to go to High school again! :) Good luck "S."

It's snowing flowers!

I have two flowering pear trees in my back yard and the ground is covered with white petals. This is the kind of snow I like.

I took a short walk today around my little town today. I was trying to clear my head out for writing changes to make in a novel I'm trying to write. I have been in the process of writing it for about 2-3 years. I write on it and quit, I hit a brick wall. Then other times I can write and write and edit and edit. It's a fun project and I basically have it finished, well somewhat. But I read it now and I want to change it so it would be perhaps, marketable in the near future. I sent it off today (by accident, I only wanted to send the first seven chapters of it) to my niece. I hope I don't bore her to death with it, as I realize I have many changes to make on it. Well, it's always nice for someone else (besides the close family) to read it. It would be under the genre of romantic Christian fiction/and or inspirational writing. I have a long time to fix it before I would ever send it to a publisher.

I have started many other novels too, but this one is just near and dear to my heart. I really enjoy writing and writing Christian novels would be really neat. :)

It's only a number

My birthday is coming up on Saturday. I get the comments, "You were almost an April Fools baby," yeah, heh, heh. According to my mom I was a little late making my appearance, so no, I wasn't almost an April Fools baby.

When I turned my milestone birthday, a couple of years ago. I didn't like it. I was getting older and had high blood pressure. I had to start wearing bi-focals. My fertility years were about to come to and end. A friend of mine said, "It's only a number." She was wise, she was older than me and had some good advice for me. "At least you are still alive."

Yes, that was true. I have had some good friends who never turned my age. Their lives were cut short at an early age. One girl had cancer, another guy I knew had a heart attack, another guy and girl drowned in rivers , and still others were involved in car accidents. So my complaints of high blood pressure pills and bi-focals meant nothing. At least I was still alive living life at my fullest. At least I could watch my family grow up and be the best parent to them as I could. I started feeling better and stronger about life.

At church we had a pastoral ministries students who talked about "empty-nesters" at age 40 and 50. I had to laugh when hearing this. I am in one of those age groups and we are not empty-nesters...that won't happen until I am in my 60's.

It's only number 52.

It Comes with the Territory

I work as a custodian of our church. I vacuum, dust, rearrange furniture, pour clorox down drains, empty trash, clean toliets, clean the sanctuary, etc., all that fun stuff. Today while I was vacuuming downstairs I saw a small daddy long-legged spider on a table. I shrieked a little. Okay, I shrieked a lot! I don't like spiders at all, but I since I am one of the custodians (along with L) I have to take care of these things right away.

When I was first married we would always run across spiders. I was "deathly" afraid of them. One time I got up in the middle of the night to my bathroom and didn't bother turning on the light until I really needed it. When I did I saw this huge black spider, it had to be at least 3 inches big! I have never ever been so scared in my life! So L comes racing in upon my blood curdling scream and takes care of it. Over the years I've been able to handle spiders a little better. I just get a big shoe and splatter it till it's dead and then some.

So today I saw another spider a big daddy-long legs (probably a harmless spider) but I screamed a little louder. I stood back trying to look for a huge shoe. Instead I took my foot and killed him on the spot.

Another pest in our church that we have are crickets. When I first took on the job I found a lot of them in about every room of the church. Ick! I hate insects that hop.

Still another pest, the one that ranks up there with the spider is the wasp. Yes, this church has wasp problem. They come out when the sunshines in from the south. They swarm in our foyer and sometimes we have seen them buzzing in church as everyone dodges them. When my son, was a little boy, he was stung by these pests. Once, we had a pastor who was allergic to wasps, so he was fearful of them too. We've always had a wasp problem as long as I can remember. I always hope that I can figure out how come they are attracted to our church. I have searched on the Internet how to make a trap to kill them and eliminate the problem. Maybe I'll do that. The only thing good with the wasps is that they kill still another problem the flies.

You see all kinds of pests and cleaning problems on this job. But it comes with the territory. I'm not complaining but don't be surprised if someday you'll hear someone gasp, because it will be me conquering the pests of the church.

24 hrs. later

Still sad about KU's loss to UCLA. I read that the team came back to AFH at around 4 AM and group of 50 people greeted them. If I lived there in Lawrence or Topeka I know that my family would be among the 50.

Today we were listening to the UNC-Georgetown game on the radio. Of course UNC Roy was ahead. So we turned off the radio we didn't want to hear about it. Then we arrived back home we checked and heard the G-Town was leading UNC by at least 10 with 50 seconds left in the game. Ahhh! Sweet victory G-Town over rivals UNC! It was great to hear that UNC was the second number one seed to go down. UNC, the media darling, went down in defeat. I would have felt REALLY BAD if UNC (Roy W) would be in the Final 4 instead of KU. This victory for G-Town was sweet and put a smile on my face.

Now that my team (KU) is out I am pulling for G-Town all the way. I am no fan of UCLA. Even though I don't like Florida I still want them to beat UCLA and put them in their place. Georgetown is deserving of a win in Atlanta.

KU loses in a Heartbreaker!

KU lost to UCLA in the Elite 8! We were hoping the team would pull through in the second half, but they didn't. We are all sad here. Long faces, crying (there is crying in basketball), we as fans of the Jayhawks wanted to be in the Final 4 as much as the team.

We have had a great season this year. I hope that our team do just as well next year. We should keep the same guys as we have no seniors on the team. There is a possibility that some players have thought about turning pro. Julian Wright said that he would return for next year. Brandon Rush, may or may not turn pro. However, in my opinion, Rush is not NBA ready this year. He should at least wait another year. He had some bad passes tonight against UCLA. Granted he was the leading scorer for the Jayhawks, but his plays are not NBA worthy. I think that he should stay with the team to become better. But again this is my opinion. He may think otherwise.

We will lose Tim Jankovich as he will become the head coach of Illinois State. He's been truly an asset for our coaching staff. Danny Manning will move up and become an associate coach to Bill Self.

I love this team of Jayhawks. Tonight wasn't their night and next year might be their year.

RCJH go KU!

KU looking to be in Final 4

The big game is tonight!! KU is playing UCLA. KU under Bill Self has gone 0-3 in Elite 8 play...so far. UCLA has always won against KU in the NCAA. I hope a new history will be written tonight. We all want KU to make it into the Final 4 despite what ESPN and history has said in the past.

KU has a bunch of nice young guys who would savor a chance to be in the Final 4. Bill Self is an excellent coach. I just really hope KU is going to play its "A +" game and take care of business. Not so many turnovers, better free-throw shooting, 3- point plays to work, blocked shots, rebounds, and stay out of foul trouble...everything that they have learned over the season. I just hope and pray everything will come into place for them. If it does, then KU will be in the Final 4 after tonight. It's time KU, it's time! Cut those nets KU!

RCJH go KU!

From the State House

This was from KSN and their report about the State Legislature. The two girls on the floor are pages from HP county. The one on the right is "s". She got back tonight exhausted from climbing up many flights of stairs. She ran errands for the house Democrats; went upstairs of the capitol building to see all of Topeka from high up; and went to lunch with the representative of our district...thank you Dennis! :) She had a great time. It indeed was honor to be in Topeka. Thank you to the social studies teacher (Lori D.) for taking the girls!

ESPN and KU

Very happy to see KU win against Southern Illinois last night. It was a nail biter, heart stopping plays, but KU was the victor.

Today, on ESPN, they talked about KU winning over SIU and that they would meet number 2 UCLA. What I didn't like is that they put up a graphic saying, "Well if History holds true then UCLA will win over KU." Give me a break...give KU some credit. The national news media is ALWAYS putting KU down. I hope that the team listens to these reports and that they will find their edginess and beat the Bruins of California. ESPN has their favorite teams, UNC, "nobody can coach like ROY, the best league is the ACC, blah, blah, blah," and their other favorite teams are any team BUT the Jayhawks. ESPN is always showing the teams losses...the Bradley and Bucknell games from years past and the losses this year to DePaul and Oral Roberts (which happened early in the season). I'll bet even their favorite team, UNC, has suffered some humbling losses but do they bring it up. No, they bury those games.

Also I do not listen to the TV sports announcers when KU is playing. If I did my blood pressure would REALLY go up! This year ESPN had KU on Big Monday, or whatever game during the week and we would ALWAYS get Fran Franscilla and Ron Franklin....blech. I really can't stand Dick Vitale either, who must own a part of ESPN and is Roy Williams bestest buddy. Over there on CBS, I will not listen, never, never, never listen to Billy Packer. He was the one who really soured me years ago to turn off the TV sound and turn on the Jayhawks radio network. KU announcers, Bob Davis and the colorful, Chris Piper, are who I listen to when the Hawks are on TV. Chris Piper has excellent analysis of the team....he is a former 1988 KU player and knows what he is talking about. Bob Davis calls the game and makes it exciting as if you were there.

Yes, KU has a treasure in Bob Davis and Chris Piper. So if you are sick of listening to national media play by play, by all means grab your radio tune to the Wellington station or KFH 98.7 FM.
(I have satellite so I listen to the Wellington station of 95 FM thereabouts and they are ahead of the broadcast...KFH is always behind. ) listen to the RADIO and turn down the TV sound because then you will have a better opinion about the team chances instead of trusting the national media. Because, let's face it they are biased!! Big time, biased.

Also if you tune in 2 hours before the game you get a rundown about KU's opponent, the assistant coaches comments, and Bill Self talking about the game. Then after the game you get a wrap up and the Bill Self talking about how the game went. It's the only way to listen to a game.
Thank you Bob and Chris. :)

RCJH...go KU!

KU makes Elite 8

This picture says it all! Whew!

Cardiac kids (KU) wins again!

Darnell Jackson making the play for KU against the SIU Egyptian Dogs.
What a game!! I think I need a nitroglycerin pill!! This was heart stopping action. SIU proved themselves to be a really good team. The refs weren't too great however, IMO. KU looked sluggish at times. Missed free throw attempts, way too many turnovers and fouls. KU is in the Elite 8. The first time in 3 years. Our next game is on Saturday against UCLA or Pitt...either team will be a formidable opponent. KU is the last of the Big 12 teams in the NCAA tourney. Texas A & M lost a heartbreaker to Memphis.
I hope that KU can rest and learn from their coach. Terrific coaching by Bill Self and the gang. Congrats to Tim Jankovich's new job to Illinois State. And also congrats to Danny Manning becoming an assistant coach to Bill.
RCJH Go KU!

KU on my mind....

KU will be playing Southern Illinois (from the Missouri Valley, same league as Wichita State) tonight at 6:00 PM. I really hope that the Hawks do well. Whenever the broadcast news comes on they always mention the other number 1 seeds and gloss over KU. KU gets no respect! I hope that the Jayhawks can go into the Elite 8 and get some respect. I have respect. The coaching staff is good and so are the players. Hopefully "everyone" will be up and ready to win!
RCJH go KU!

Topeka bound!

My daughter is going to Topeka on Thursday to be a page for a day. A page has to be at least 12 years old and over. The teacher chose three students from Harper Jr. High after they wrote a paragraph on why they wanted to work as a page in Topeka for a day. The page runs errands for the House of Representatives. The rep may want a copy of a bill sent over to another rep; or the rep. may want a cup of coffee or soft drink; or the rep. may want some kind of snack; or any numerous activity. The page is not allowed to use the elevator and must go up at least 5 flights of stairs...whew!

The pages are in a room and the reps will paige a page to do a certain task for them.

My brother, who is 6 years older than me, was a page at one time back in the 60's. He stayed a week with our uncle and aunt in Topeka. My uncle, who worked in a government agency arranged for my brother to become a page. He enjoyed the experience. When I was in the seventh grade I wanted to do this too, but my uncle died suddenly that winter and I never got to work as a page.

So now it is bittersweet that my daughter, many years later, has the honor in serving as a page.
I can see my uncle smiling now! :)

I was hoping that s would be going to Topeka this Saturday for the State Spelling Bee. But she came in second in the county, so they don't let alternates come for the championship. Oh well.

My thoughts will be with her and safe travel for the group. I know that she wants to see KU play on TV or at least listen to the game. She's excited for the trip, but wishes she could see the Hawks play too!

The differences between cats and dogs

Since I've been a dog person most of my life sometimes it is hard to read the cat body language.

Most dogs when they have missed you can't get enough of your touches, your hugs and your loving. When you leave them they wonder if you will ever return. And when you do the reunion is sweet for both dog and master. When a dog is not feeling well the dog will make some kind of chocking noise and she goes out. When you set a bowl of food out for the dog she will eat it right off and want more.

Cats...do not feel the same way as dog when you return from a trip. It's like "Oh hi, how you doing? I've been fine." You CAN pat a cat too much. You have to watch for the signs. Cat wagging his tail is not like a dog wagging hers. Cat's ears are flat against his head. Cat makes a low growl or hissing noise. It's like, "I've warned you now stay away from me or else!" You have to leave the cat alone until he makes up his mind that he misses you.

When their humans are sick, cats win in that department. They want to be near you and comfort you. They will sleep on your bed and near you head. Watching over you. They are a great comfort.

It is interesting to be a dog---cat family. Life is never dull. :)

Do You Know the Way to San Jose?

Apparently the Jayhawks do!! They beat Kentucky just now 88-76! Chicago Native, Julian Wright, scored 21 points and Brandon Rush was hot today with 19 points and a bunch of three point plays! KU looked really good!! Best of luck to them on Thursday when they meet Missouri Valley opponent, the Southern Illinois Salukis.
We just got back from Lawrence today. We re-visited AFH and walked around on the campus. It was great to be back, even though AFH was empty. They had a wild St. Patrick's day parade up and down Massachusetts Street yesterday. EVERYBODY on their main drag was wearing green shirts and green hats. Party atmosphere on Mass Street.
We ate supper at the Longhorn Steak House. That was superb food! We ordered the chicken tenders and had a huge order. The taste of the food was excellent. The restaurant decor was of a western motif. It's amazing how people can design a restaurant from the pictures on the walls of cowboys, cowgirls, and western lighting, with a huge head of steer in the bar area. They had children's menu for 10 and under. If anyone visits Lawrence, this is a restaurant you should go to. The next time though, we may go to the Salty Iguana. Lawrence has grown by leaps and bounds and west Lawrence is so nice. We saw Free-State High School and it was huge.
Some people have spring break off all week. I'm back to work tomorrow and will be quite busy.
Tonight I'll be dreaming of KU and how sweet it is! :)

KU Wins in the first round!

KU beat Niagra tonight. This is the first time they got past the first round since 2004. The team has had to "grin and bear it" when the national media rubbed their noses in their previous first round losses to Bucknell and Bradley. Everytime that KU had to play on national media (CBS and ESPN) this year, they ALWAYS showed the "low-light" reels of KU losing to Bucknell and Bradley. Hopefully we won't have to put up with that anymore. Leave the past behind!

The Jayhawks next game will be against the Kentucky Wildcats on Sunday afternoon. It will be a KU-UK match. The Wildcats are an 8th seed in the west division. The last time these two teams met was back on January 7, 2006 in Lawrence. KU won that game. KU also played them back on Jan. 9, 2005, in Lexington, KY, with KU winning that one as well. So no doubt the Wildcats will want to win this game from the Hawks big time. Just hopefully Bill and the rest of the coaching staff will have scouted out this team well enough and the players can play KU style basketball. Best of luck to the coaching staff and the players on Sunday! Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

March Madness/Spring Break!

This is what I like to see...Cutting down the nets!

Today is the first of the NCAA basketball games for 2007 championship. This is what the basketball teams all over the country look forward to, while kids going to school look forward to Spring Break.

KU a number 1 seed in the west bracket is playing tomorrow! Can't wait!! Best of luck to them! Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

Spring Break is starting tomorrow for my kids as well. We will be spending a day in their favorite college town, home of the Jayhawks! We want to eat at a couple of different restaurants, shop and hang out on the campus. We make our trek to L-town at least once a year, last year it was twice a year. Some people schedule their vacation around spring break taking their kids to California, Florida and wherever else in the U. S. I wonder if teachers do this too? :) I guess it would depend if the spouse was a teacher too and if they had the time to plan a vacation.

After the break the kids are supposed to come back to school refreshed, relaxed and ready for school to begin again working toward the end of May, 9 weeks to go until summer vacation!

The flu/the cat

I got over my one-day flu bout. I got plenty of rest yesterday and last night. Catman (as I call my cat) wakes up at 3:30-4 AM. I think he is lonely. Everyone goes to bed and he's by himself. I think I have a nocturnal cat! Another thing about the litter box. I change it every other day and smell that Special Kitty stuff a lot. It is pretty dusty. I'm thinking I'll either put a mask over my face as to not inhale it or change the brand. SK is cheap stuff for 25 pounds. Sometimes I think I should change catman's food as he has had a couple of kernals a day. He does get plenty of water in his bowl and even drinks out of the dog bowl. I've learned one thing about the cat, he hates the vacuum cleaner! I found him hiding beside his litter box bunched in a ball.

I wonder how long does it take for a cat to get used to his new home? Everybody (including me) really likes Catman and couldn't face giving him up. J and S come home from school and gives him plenty of attention. I worry about him not eating.

I am so used to dogs. You feed dogs and they gobble it right up. You give your dog love and attention; they go outside and run around. They are a loyal companion. I was told that cats are low maintenance. I'm beginning to think that they are not. Dogs are low maintenance, in my opinion.

I haven't told the inlaws about the new addition. For they would say, "Why do you want a cat?" and "Oooh it's inside? Cats should be outside." Of course, this is what they say about the dog too.

When I was growing up I always had some kind of pet. A couple of stray cats, a dog, hampsters, chickens, and goldfish. I think it is good for the child who has something live to take care of. The kids can give their pet some love. And isn't that what the world is needing more of...love?

The Flu Bug bit me and I wish I could swat it like a mosquito!

All last week I had a deep sore throat, followed by coughing, and sneezing. I have been feeling congested and so tired. I had the horrible body aches last night and got 3 hours of sleep, fearing the worst!

All this time I was comforted by L but my new cat was a loyal buddy. He would sleep at the head of my bed, close to me, watching over me, mewing at me and purring. Thanks to his purring I finally settled down and L was great to have nearby too.

This cat is a keeper. Now he is getting some extra zzzz's and I think he's a little nocturnal. But he was a great comfort in a time of need.

Catman

We have our new addition and he is just getting used to our schedule and his new home. The cat hasn't eaten any food (that I know of), but he has been in his litter box and had some water. Today, I changed his box, water, and food hoping that he would be eating. He hasn't touched the food and I'm not looking in the box!

The cat and the dog get along well. So well that when the dog needed to go out this early am the cat meowed at 4:00 Am until 7AM. I think the dog will have to stay in with his new buddy.

Everyone including the dad likes the cat. But I think the cat needs more time to adjust. If he could just get his meowing in control that would be helpful. I came out of bed early to talk to the cat boy and he stopped meowing. We all need time to adjust! I'm hoping it will still work out.

KU Winners/Number 1 seed in NCAA

KU did it again! After being down by 22 points, KU pulled ahead and was tied at the end of regulation play. They beat Texas by 4 points! What a game! Mario Chalmers had a clutch field goal and fouled out of the game. All of these guys, Julian Wright, Sasha Kaun, Russell Robinson, Brandon Rush, Darrell Arthur, Darnell Jackson, and Sherron Collins did great as a team. This is how a team works. Each of them did well on scoring points, blocking shots, and rebounding. Unlike their opponent, Durant and the Longhorns...they base their team around one guy. If they didn't have Durant they wouldn't even be a factor in the game.

Congrats to KU for making a number 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. I hope that they do well the first game and win. They have had trouble before in the first game. Rock Chalk Jayhawk, Go KU!

KU wins Friday and other ramblings

KU Jayhawks had an impressive win over Oklahoma today. Tomorrow, the team will be playing in-state rival K-State in the afternoon.

Today is a pretty afternoon. The kids didn't have school today. Yet, J wants to play video games with his friend. His friend says that it's "boring" over at J's house and leaves for another house. I insist that J go out and play. He could shoot hoops or do something. I don't want my son to be overweight and lazy like a couple of boys in his class. Kids need to be active. Sometimes I wish that J would have some better friends nearby. Kids that actually go out and play for at least 30 minutes a day. When I was younger and way before video games, computer, cable/satellite TV, I would get out of the house and shoot hoops for hours. We would play H-O-R-S-E or ride our bikes around town or even play cards, checkers, and attempt to play chess. We kept active back then. I didn't have any close "girl" friends in my neighborhood, so I would end up playing with kids younger than me and still have a great time. Sometimes we would even play rag tag football. If you know me now, you wouldn't have believed that I was a tomboy.

We need to build a court in our backyard so J could practice more. And he needs more athletic boys to play sports with than the two couch potatoes who live in the neighborhood. Sometimes I think I should just take him out to a court and we could shoot hoops...but he's to the age that he doesn't want to hang out with mom anymore.

1 day until we get our new cat! I can't wait! I hope the cat does well in our house and is a joy to have. I've been reading up on how to make the cat happy. Now I need to read up how to make my husband happy now that he's going to have a cat! :)

We've got a new addition to our family!

We are officially adopting a new cat. He was in need of a home because his "parents" moved to another town. He's been staying inside a building with his "grandmother" looking in on him from day to day.

Yesterday our new veterinarian asked us if we would like to see him. But, he cautioned that the owner had promised the cat to an elderly lady, so not to get too excited. We met the vet at the building and there he was. He was orange and white, with long whiskers. We started patting him and he began to slobber. I had never seen a cat slobber before, it was strange. The vet said that cats are happy when they slobber. Then he started to purr loudly, like we were his lost friends. I had seen this cat a couple of times and was thrilled to see him again.

Later that evening I received a phone call from his "mom" and she started talking about how she was looking for someone to adopt the cat. She had talked to the new vet and he said that I was looking to adopt a cat. She knew who I was immediately and thought that would be neat as we are nice adoptive parents to their dog. For you see, this cat's "parents" were my former veterinarian and his wife. So now we will have their cat at our home too. The cat is neutered, almost 6 years old, litter boxed trained, declawed (great on our furniture), and is an indoor cat...just what I was looking for.

The cat's "mom" told me that we have been great to the dog. I'm not sure if they will think so as the dog is in need of a grooming! But the dog is happy and alive at the ripe old age of 10. So unlike those people in Hutch who doesn't know anything, I did get a glowing report from the cat's "mom."

We are planning to change the cat's name to a KU basketball player's name.

He is coming home to us on Saturday night after his "mom" says goodbye to him. I hope whenever she is in town that she could stop by and see her cat and dog. I have told them to come by and see the dog. One time their son was in the neighborhood and I had him come see the dog. I think the world of these people!

KU Jayhawks Wins Big 12 Regular Season!

After this week's wins over Oklahoma and the Texas thriller, KU is now number 2 in the nation polls!! WOW!

The players are very nice young men as we met them the end of December after attending our first KU game. After the game we got autographs from most all of them and they were very nice kids. A couple of players were sick that night so they didn't do autographs, which was quite okay with me. We were most impressed with the ones who talked to us, which was nearly all of them. I even talked to Mario Chalmers and told him he had a good game, he smiled and said thank you. We took pictures with Brandon Rush, Julian Wright (who had a bit of advice for J about his pen cap!) :) , and Jeremy Case (a very nice polite kid!). Sasha Kaun is VERY tall in person he smiled at these little girl cheerleaders (around 5 years old or so) and said they were cute. He's got a thick accent.

These players are role models for kids who like basketball. They are really great representives of the University of Kansas. They are so nice! I've also met some other players from KU. I was most impressed with Jeff Graves and Michael Lee.

A lot of times, in professional sports there are so many players that aren't so nice and could care less about the fans. I ran into one such player, I won't name him only that he played for the Royals and that he's a couple of years older than me, he has long since retired but is still with the organization. (I think that would give you a clue who that could be!). I was/am so unimpressed with him to this day!

I just hope these KU players stay as nice as they are for a long time, it makes for lasting impressions.

Good luck to KU! I'm pulling for you! :)

Our new Veterinarian!

Great news! I called the new veterinarian and he came out to see the dog today. I recognized that he had worked with our previous vet before...so it was nice to see someone I half way knew. He was recommended by GB at my church. Thanks GB! :) He also had a new ad in our weekly paper.

So he checked on my dog's temperature and her incontinence problem. He discovered that she need some pills to help her through it as she is aging. Then he gave her a parvo shot and a rabies shot good for two years. So now I am a responsible owner! He also said that the dog looked healthy. So I must be a good owner, take that Hutchinson!

I told those people in Hutch I would get the dog's vaccinations on Monday and I was good to my word. Yet, they were in a rush and didn't take out time to check out my promise. The Humane Society in Hutch is closed today, so what was the rush!? Sheesh! I felt like calling them up and telling them I AM a good owner. They don't know squat!

So I talk to the vet and said we were looking for a cat but because we weren't up to date we were turned down. I asked him if he knew of any cats. He said that he had a whole bunch of cats on his farm. They were orange! We want one that is orange, likes dogs, and would be an indoor cat. I would be afraid that the cat would get killed by cars or by some other cat or dog. He said if the one cat wouldn't work out then we could try another cat. Isn't living in a small town just great!? I like this vet!

Maybe we will get our cat yet....today is a better day than it started out to be! My kids are going to be so excited!! PTL! :) :) :) :)

My Collie

I woke up today and noticed a rug was gone in the kitchen. My guess was that my collie had an accident. So I called up "L" and sure enough she did. :( I realize my dog is aging...she is 10 years old. I've looked up how old Collie's live to be and the span is 10-13 years. :( I don't even want to think about her dying! :( I felt like it was a "death" in the family when we didn't get approved for the cat.

I am calling up a new veterinarian as soon as I can. Maybe he can shed some light (and I mean in a positive way) on what's going on with the dog. I need some cheering up.

Application for cat rejected!

When I first heard the news I was angered, disgusted, and upset. We went through the application process on Saturday and it was rejected on Sunday. We had no time getting a vet in such a short notice. They said we were not responsible pet owners because our dog's vaccinations were not up to date. My kids are heartbroken and I was making plans on how to take care of the cat. The worker of the shelter left a message on my machine. So after ranting and raving the past hour or so, I wrote them a note telling them about our dilema.

"Dear ms. M: I received your message and felt the need to explain a few things. Our town is an hour away and we currently have no veterinarians. Our own personal vet moved away, another vet had died, and another vet is no long in practice because of personal problems. Then just this week in our "weekly" paper, another vet advertised his services. I am planning on contacting him tomorrow (Monday).

I am sorry if you think that we are bad owners because we haven't got our dog vaccinated. We adopted out dog through (our regular vet's name) and he knows we are responsible people.

I know when we went through the application process we could have lied and not told you that we even had a dog and that she wasn't current with her shots. But, I chose to tell you the truth up front. The only thing that I am guilty of is telling the truth.

Our vet's number in his new town is.....They will tell you that we are good people and that we truly love animals.

I had previously contacted you through email about adopting the cat, but couldn't see him until this past week because of my children's school activities.

I wish that we would have been informed that there was someone else who put their application in before us.

....the cat would have made a wonderful addition to our family. We will miss not having him as a part of our family.

I hope I made them think as I was trying to get my point across. We are not bad, irresponsible owners...But this town is in desperate need for a vet or two. It's not my fault that the vet either died, or moved or have personal problems. It is a problem for the city if not the county in general.

I try to tell my kids not to lie and to tell the truth at all times. This situation didn't help. Honesty, maybe good in some instances depending whom you are dealing with. I do try to have good moral character, even if I am not a responsible owner. At least I am a responsible parent, caregiver, and my dog is happy.

We will get her shots up to date, provided we find the right vet.

I strongly urge no one to go to Hutchinson, KS animal shelter as they won't give you a chance to explain yourself if you have special circumstances like we did. They didn't even contact any of my references. We would have loved that cat. Thank you Hutchinson Animal Shelter for breaking our hearts. :(

Adopting a pet cat process

We went to see this nice looking orange cat about 60 miles away (my former hometown) and when we got out of the van, I say to my kids, "There's no guarantees. We may not even like the cat or buy it." So we walked into the vet clinic and there was the cat. The vet assistant opened the cage and placed the cat in my arms. The cat was calm as we all patted him. He was a beautiful orange cat with white under his chin and stomach. I haven't owned a cat since I was 12 or 13. So as we patted him "S" looks up at her dad and says, "Please???" I pat the cat and I'm thinking, "What a nice cat!" Then, I start chocking up...me the "no guarantees" person. I was falling in love with the cat. I liked it right off knowing that he gets along with dogs and is litter boxed trained AND that he was orange in color. My very first cat I had when I was three was an orange cat. But this one didn't remind me of my first cat only that he was the same color.

So we talk about adopting the cat and "S" dad finally caves in....barely. Here's a guy who only had one dog in is life and had to "adopt" "L" my beloved dog (who died nearly 9 years ago) when we got married a few years back. He liked our old dog and tolerates "D" a large dog. I think that he really likes "D" but really liked "L" much better. Some men do not like cats at all, but yet I know other men who prefer cats over dogs. They tell me that cats are "low maintenance."

We went to the Animal Shelter (after KU's win over Texas!) and had to fill out some papers. You would think I was applying for a job! I had to tell them why I liked the cat, if we had other pets, the name of my vet (I'll elaborate more on that), the expense that adopting a cat would cause, where we would put the cat if we were gone (they didn't ask where we would put him if we went on a three week vacation!), if the cat was going to be indoor or outdoor (definitely indoor, the cat would live longer and be much safer inside the house), if we were going to get the cat de-clawed (no), and then they wanted three references!! So I gave them my mom's name, a friend, and my pastor's name and number. I hope I would get a glowing recommendation from all three of these people.

Now the vet situation...we had the best vet ever, Dr. Tom and he moved a year or two ago. He was the one who gave us "D" and he knew how much we cared for "L." Now "D" is past due on her shots and I don't have a vet. I saw an ad in the paper about a vet so I might call him like tomorrow or so! But the Animal Shelter needs Dr. Tom's recommendation...I said, "Well he's moved and the practice too." So I wrote his name down...if only they could get a hold of him, then I think the cat would be ours.

The Shelter said they would call us in a couple of days...keep your fingers crossed!

Spelling Bee Excitement!

WOW! "S" did well in the Spelling Bee today. I don't know who is more nervous, the students or their parents. "S" made second in the county bee! "J.D." from 8 miles south of my town was the first place winner he spelled "innumerable" (I'm not even sure if that's correctly spelled!). The winners of the bee were: "J.D." first place from 8 miles south; S" was second; and "T.P.", a fifth grade student from our town and from our church took third place. Congrats to "T.P." he did well in the bee. I expect to see him next year.

"S" and "J.D." had a spell off of several words, some of which I couldn't even spell. Here are some of them (the ones I could spell!) :) phosphorus (they both missed that one), academic, celluloid, chlorine, association, titanium, university, existence, refurbish, and existence. "S" had trouble with differential.

"S" studied a lot of words last night. But it's difficult to figure which words they will choose. When I watched the bee today I wrote down every word that was given, and checked the ones that the student missed.

So now she is an alternate for HP county if and only if J.D. would get sick. That won't happen, not if he can help it! I think it would be cool if we went to Topeka to see the State Bee in March.

This is "S" last year for the bee as she is in 8th grade. Next year, I'll try and get "J" in it as he is a great speller too!

Movie assignment tonight, rent and watch "Akeelah and the Bee." It's a story of triumph!
When the Scripps Spelling Bee (the National Spelling Bee in D.C.) in May is on watch it, you will be amazed at what these kids know.

St. David's Day

It's St. David's Day, March 1st, in Wales. Since I am of Welsh decent (1/4 Welsh to be exact) I thought I would mention St. David's Day.

March is coming in like a freezing lamb. The skies are sunny but the temps are very cold. Today is "S" Spelling Bee since it was cancelled last week. I am pumped for her. Just hope she does as well as she did in 6th grade when she placed 3rd in the county. I know regardless of what place she gets we know she can spell and spell well. We are proud of her efforts no matter what. She has worked hard.
