Last blog of 2007

Well the new year's celebration is tonight. We reflect on what has happened during this year and look forward to next year. Was 2007 good for everyone? What would you change? What would you keep the same? What would you improve? These are all things to think about each time you start a New Year. Maybe you could think about this everyday. You think okay what did I mess up today and how can I change and improve things. Think about it.
------
For New Year's Eve celebration we make our potato skins (not at all close to how TGI Friday's taste), and we make pizza (again we don't make the expectations of Pizza Hut). Then we usually watch TV and pull fireworks at night, scaring the dog, the cat, and J. When I was younger my parents would never celebrate it with me. It was just another day. My parents wouldn't stay up either. And they were younger than what I am now! So I would ask my mom to get me some pizza rolls and buy me some 7 up. Then I would go downstairs and play some records and turn on the old color wheel (that belonged to our old silver Christmas tree) and turn off the lights. That was my celebration. It wasn't much but it was something. S complains that ours is boring....well if she lived my life she would think this would be exciting!! Usually every year I would have a cold. I have one sort of this year. Some things never change. One time I worked as a baby sitter and brought a friend over. I had to leave early because I felt cruddy. So she finished up my job and after that night she was the one they called to babysit instead of me. Oh well...I got over it. But I still remember it.
-------
Another new year's celebration was back before I met L. There were the 5 of us. I was with my date, my friend with her date, and the guy that our dates worked with. Actually we all worked at the same place. We were with Ma Bell and they were the computer techs, far from being nerdy at all. That was nearly 25 years ago and since that time my friend has died and her boyfriend/common law husband does computer work (I think) and my date never married. I was glad that the relationship never worked out. It wasn't meant to be. I am sooooo happy now with L, my hubby of nearly 20 years!
-----
Then I can remember one New Year's day with news that my uncle had died. He was watching the Rose Bowl parade and died of a heart attack. That was 40 years ago and now I am the same age as he was. That was the saddest New Year that we ever had. But the best New Years was when my nephew, D, was born 32 years ago.
------
So make your New Years eve a great celebration. Be happy that you have good health, good friends, and are alive. It's up to you to make your New Year really great!!
Have a Happy 2008!!

Back from the KU BB game!

Just got back tonight from the northeastern part of the state. It was a long two days. I wrote in my notebook several "mini blogs." Mostly because I couldn't sleep last night and secondly because it was so exciting to be at the game.

We ate at our favorite place in Larrytown the ----Horn Steakhouse. Then we checked into our hotel and drove around on Mass Street and around the campus. We watched families sled down the hills of KU. Then we went to the Booth Athletic Hall of Fame. We thought for sure we could slip out of the Hall of Fame, open a door and wait inside before the game. Nope. Didn't happen. So we waited outside for at least an hour. It was so cold!! We were hoping SOMEONE would take pity on us and open a door. No they did not. We just wanted to wait inside the lobby like we did the past two times. We hopped to keep warm and were the only 4 people in line. The other ones went to another door and thought we had the wrong door.

While waiting I was stretching my right leg and started to get THE WORST FOOT CRAMP known in my existence. I usually get these if I've been out in the cold for a while (usually get them swimming in extremely cold water). It felt like my foot was crossing. I took off my shoe and my sock and started massaging it. L suggested that I put the sock back on to keep it warm (not because it stunk!). He told me to walk on it. I walked all around the area we were waiting and I even saw Cole Aldrich walking around. We did see Brady Morningstar and Sherron Collins come to the arena. Sherron pitched a snowball in Brady's direction playfully.

Finally the door opened at 4:30 and we could at least wait inside for one hour. (My Feet are so tired!!). While waiting inside I was feeling sort of icky and I kept thinking what would happen if I would get sick right there!! Maybe it was just butterflies, I don't know. Soon the feeling went away when we got inside to watch KU play. Our seats were better than the last time. We got to see Bill coach his team.

Afterwards (KU beat Yale by 33 points) we lined up for autographs and I mean EVERYONE was there. So we went to the end of the tunnel entrance and was told to move down the hall. We thought oh surely they wouldn't come down THIS far. Well they did. It turns out that being down there was one of the BEST spots we could be in.

We waited for autographs and pictures of the athletes for 1 hour after the game.

By the time we got back to the hotel my feet were so sore. But it was worth every minute just to talk to the players and see them.

LarryTown Basketball!

We are packing our bags to drive up the turnpike tomorrow. Strategically planning where the best seat is in General Admission. S would say the best seat is in the student section near the goal. I would say the best seat would be behind the bench, or pretty near that area. Planning to have lunch at the Long---- and not at a turnpike McDonald's or Flying J.

At the game get our pizza and pop and think about getting popcorn at the half. Cheering our lungs out for our favorite players and watching dunks made by Sasha Kaun and Darnell Jackson. Hearing the crowd cheer loudly for Brandon Rush and Sherron Collins. The courtside announcer shout, "From New York" and the crowd in response answer "NEW YORK!!" for Russell Robinson. When they do the commercials for Gatorade and ask "Gatorade is it in you?" The crowd responding a resounding "NO!!!" Hearing the national anthem, the alma mater song "Hail to Old KU." Then the daunting "Rock Chalk" chant. The Big Jay and the Baby Jay, the flag coming out of the tunnell and the players running out of the tunnell.

Cheering for the players making great players and cheering with the student section. Listening to the band play to get you in the mood, if you are not already.

WOW!! (as Dave Armstrong would say). It is "wow!" The half time show, the half time rush to the bathrooms (LOL!) and to the concession stands. Then the end of the game. Rushing downstairs to find a good spot to meet the players for autographs and pictures.

It's hard to settle down once you get back to the hotel. But of course, you can watch a replay of the game on Channel 6.

Maybe some day we can take one of S's friends up there and J's friend, K1. We'd have a great time!

Lovin' LarryTown Basketball! :)

Between Holidays

It's after Christmas and before New Years. We are now playing with our "new" toys. We are trying out our new gadgets. S tried out my new cookie scoop and likes it. I have yet to try the brand new rolling pin (aka Husband beater) on any dough, I don't use it on the husband! We played the DVD version of "Family Feud," and we are confused by the instructions. We have yet to try the Scene It versions of the 2nd edition Movies and Harry Potter versions (this was for S as I have not read any of those books!). We continue to look for triple A batteries as it is not in the local grocery store.

I received a gift card and looked through the store to see what I would like. It's funny when you don't have a gift card or money you can think of a lot of items to buy but when you DO have it you can't think of a one. Perhaps it is the time of season. I should be looking beyond winter and think what little item that I am wanting to have in the spring/summer. Hmmm!! I can smell the barbeque now...perhaps we will get that. Thankfully there is no expiration dates on this particular store.

In three more days we will be up at Larry town to see our Jayhawks play. That is a pretty good present to have each year to have tickets to the basketball game. We are planning to eat at a good restaurant while we are there, our favorite one. Then we will be doing our after Christmas/New Year's shopping in Capital City. Hopefully the weather will give us a break this weekend and we will have clear roads.

Merry Christmas

As I write this blog, Christmas stockings are filled; children are sleeping; L and and the grandparent are sleeping too. S has written her Christmas letter to "Claus," and "he" has answered.

What? You're thinking, she still writes to Claus? Yep, it's one of our traditions. Each Christmas Eve, "Santa," gets not only his treats but a Christmas letter just to keep the old guy up on things and also to answer very many questions. This year, however, the tradition was just about to end. But S did it anyway.

Thinking back on the traditions of what I did as a child and what my children do are nearly the same. When I was a child I begged my parents relentlessly to please open a present. Actually, it was my brother who did this. Some of his friends got him started on this tradition. Then my Santa never wrapped presents. Each morning we had to wait on my parents, while they turned on the lights and watched us run out to see our presents. I can remember the red, blue, and orange bulbs that glistened in our tree each morning. I would always hang my stocking on one of the doorhandles in the living room. I would always get chocolate marshmallow santas (and could eat all 12 of them that very day!!). The day before Christmas we would drive around the Salt City and look at the neighbors Christmas lights.

In our family we let the kids open packages from their aunt and uncle from the northwest and we go to Christmas Eve services. We look at the Christmas lights and Christmas Eve night we watch a movie. Then they write their Claus letter. When they were younger we used to tape them running down the hall. Now, since they are older, they still want us to get up early just to unwrap their packages. I wouldn't miss it. I usually hide their stockings until we are ready to make an early morning appearance. I can't stand it when they peak in their stockings before I get to see the look on their faces.

Many things have changed from growing up until now. I imagine that they will be starting new traditions with their own families as well in the future.

Have a very Merry Christmas my fellow bloggers!

The Salt City/Changing tradition

I went to the "Salt City" today and haven't been there since after Thanksgiving. Since that time the "city" endured a powerful ice storm. I had heard that many people were without power for quite a long time.

I went to my old neighborhood and couldn't believe all the limbs that were down. Someone said that it looked like a war zone. It looked like a tornado had been through that area as well. Every lawn in that neighborhood had major limbs down! At my parents' house the two trees in front looked so bad! The folks had had these trees for 51 years! Big huge limbs hung down from the trees. Then in the back yard, two major limbs blocked the entrance for my parent to go into the garage. Also that brought the electric line from the house to the garage down. It was a mess in the backyard futher down the yard. My parent one of those old black gas lights (that was popular in the 60's) and it was crushed!

It was sad to see all of the destruction caused by the ice storm. We had the same problem in this town 3 years back but I don't remember it being THAT bad.

Thankfully my parent will receive some assistance in getting the limbs cleared away. What a mess!
----
This year we are doing something different. We are having Christmas Eve dinner or lunch. Because of L's schedule and our own, we decided to eat a day early and take my parent back on Christmas. We had no other way to do it. So now I have confused everyone. I thought I had told the inlaws that we would have dinner on Christmas Eve and they thought it was going to be on "Blizzard Saturday." Then there was a question on when we would do the gift exchange. Well, I said we would do that the same, but just have the dinner a day earlier. I'm not sure if this will go over too big with everyone. I told them if we would need something to add to the dinner then at least the stores would be open to get it. We probably wouldn't have to do this next year as Christmas will be on a Thursday. I think this is a one time deal only. And my family will be thankful for knowing that bit of trivia. :)

KU Basketball 12---0/Blizzard!

Sasha Kaun and Darnell Jackson are congratulating each other for a great play during the game on Saturday, Dec. 22nd. Hope that K1 and his g-pa had a great day of it there. I hope that they are able to drive back home this evening despite the weather!!

On the KU game, they beat their opponent, Miami (of Ohio) 78--54. The Miami team had a 44 game streak where their opponent was held to under 70 points. The Jayhawks only turned the ball over 6 times in the contest. Leading scorers were Darrell Arthur and Darnell Jackson each with 14 points, followed by Brandon Rush and Mario Chalmers with 10 a piece. Contributing to the win were: Sherron Collins (coming off of the bench) with 8 points, Sasha Kaun with 5 points, Cole Aldrich with 4 points, scoring 3 points were Russell Robinson, Conner Teahan, and Brennan Bechard (all of these were 3 pointers), and rounding out the scoring was Rodrick Stewart with 2. It was a good game. But the television was horrible to watch. The picture would keep breaking up and would flash. UGH!! And then they would have captions on...WHY? Who knows why? I could hear the announcers, if I wanted to, but I chose instead to listen to the radio because I would miss some plays if I didn't. As many times as it flashed off and on, it was nearly impossible to watch the game.

Yes, it's great to go to the game in person. I hope that K1 had fun and got some autographs.
-----
Blizzard....it looked as if the forecasters got it wrong today and we thought about going to H town. Ha! They got it right and then some. It started out spitting snowflakes and I thought well maybe not H town maybe A town. Not even that town. We went out to work and by the time we finished, it was a full blown blizzard. We couldn't see anyway across the highway. Couldn't see the Pastor house from the church at all. It was a mess. Finally it cleared up some and we went back to church. There were drifts up to 2 feet!! I wonder if we will have church tomorrow? We might if RV comes and cleans the rest of it off. However, I don't see the old people coming. I've never seen it that bad here in quite a while. Now, I hope this snow is through until whenever!!
PS...Santa I need new boots!

The Annual Christmas Letter

I have yet to receive my annual Christmas letter from a family member and a friend. The family member has been writing her Christmas letter for as long as I can remember. My friend just started writing one the year of her second marriage.

I am not a big fan of the Christmas letter. I see it as a way to be impersonal rather than personal. I like it when people tell me what they've been doing and add a personal note. But with the "Christmas Letter" you feel like another number. You feel like they are too lazy to write you anything.

For instance, your family member or friend may say, "During Easter of last year we took Uncle Ernie and Auntie Bernie to the Easter Islands and guess who we ran into? The Easters!" Well, of course you are totally in the dark! Who is Ernie and Bernie and the Easters? They may be important to the writer but the receiver of the letter could care less what you did on Easter, who Ernie and Bernie and the Easters are. Then of course, they have to give you an over view of the year, month by month and day by day. Blech! I can see it now. They take down their calendar and look at what they've done. "Doctor's appointment, vacation, game....oooh what would make the Christmas Letter sound Exciting this YEAR? The letter is NOT exciting, trust me.

Then if your friend or family member has no children they start to write about their pets as if they were their children. "Sprinkles just turned 45 this year, but of course that's in cat years." Then they add something like "tee hee." THEY think it's funny. You think they are just weird.

I'm glad that I haven't got the "letter" yet. But wait, I could in the next few days. Groan! I'll have to let everyone know what they said in the annual letter. Now, I bet YOU can't wait either!
--------
It's snowing outside. Yet another weekend blown to smithereens. No wonder I am behind on my shopping. For the past 3 weekends it has snowed, iced or something crummy. I am hoping next weekend will be the first weekend in December where there will be no precipitation as we will be traveling to see my beloved Jayhawks men's basketball team. Flute's son, K1, is going today. I'll be praying for him and his g-pa to keep safe! Hopefully they are on the road and won't be having any troubles on the way up.
------
Keep K1 and his g-pa in prayer; Flute too; and my friend Maurine (as she broke her hip and recovering from surgery yesterday).

Christmas Ramblings

I started writing about a couple of subjects so I'll just rename the title to "Christmas Ramblings."

Every year our two little county newspaper publish Santa Letters written by kids. In the A paper they have the most entertaining letters. For instance, the kids will leave Santa cookies and milk. Well one kid will be going to Mickey D's and getting Santa a 20-piece chicken nuggets and fries. Better get him a supersized drink while he's at it. My kids would leave Santa Coca Cola and orange-pineapple cookies oh and of course carrots for the reindeer. Santa would be drinking some nice hot cocoa usually to finish up his "work."

Flute's K3 wrote in and said she wanted "Butterscotch" the pony (this is that 225 dollar item over at Wal-Mart). Another little boy said that he wanted a new dog, to be specific a Yorkshire Terrier. Do you think he wants it or does mom (Stacie) want it? Some kids want PS2, cell phone, Razor phone, xbox, a Wii, a laptop (I'd like a laptop!), those annoying heely's, or a Ninetendo DS.

One letter caught my eye. It was a long letter talking about Chopper (apparently a puppy). Then the child makes some request on behalf of his uncles. He asks Santa to get his uncle some "Rogaine and bigger muscles so he doesn't get beat up by my Daddy." LOL!!! ROFTL! This same uncle needed some bubble gum cigarettes..uh huh. Another Uncle (in the same family) needed some "new brass knuckles since his are worn down from trying to beat up my Daddy, who is made out of wrought iron and brawn." Daddy sounds like a big 'ol bruiser. Does Daddy live in the Big House? Or do the Uncles? Then at the end the writer concludes that to make sure Otto is in his bed so Santa won't get bit. Santa make sure you are wearing some armour when you enter THIS house!! LOL!! Too funny!
---------
I still have to clean my house tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it. Not. At least I have the "guest room" cleaned up. But I have other areas that need attention. Sometimes I wish I was a "neat freak." It would be so nice and picked up and I would be so organized. But no, I am not a neat freak at home, maybe at work I am. I have to be. Besides there are a lot more storage space at church. At least there used to be.

I should write to Santa myself, "Dear Santa, I would like a brand new room to either put all my papers in or to have an upstairs game room, or a bedroom. A new room about the size of my master bedroom. That would do. Or, I need siding for my house."

Santa, are you listening?

"Do you want Paper or Plastic?"

You get asked this question all of the time at the grocery store or sometimes they don't even ask you and the sackers give you plastic. I always answer plastic. Maybe I shouldn't. Here's what happened at my local store today.

Today I was in need of 2 big brown paper sacks. I am needing to wrap a package in brown so I can send it off in the mail. I figured that it would be free getting these paper sacks. WRONG!
I was shocked when the clerk said to me, "Do you know what they charge you?" I was taken aback! "Charge? Well, I never heard of that!" The clerk says, "We even charge the school when they have Red Ribbon Week. " (Kids Pre-K through 5th grade decorate paper sacks as a part of their activities.) And I'm think, well, how many do you give (charge) to the school? (School, if you want to save money, stop purchasing these things). Make sure every teacher stocks up on these and they will no longer have to ask this store for brown paper bags.

Can you believe it? What was once a traditional bag to carry groceries in is no longer free, it incurs a charge.

So if I would have asked for paper would they make me pay higher for not using plastic? Would they have tacked it onto my bill? They shouldn't make you pay a fee either way. That's just ludicious! I should have asked them to bag my two items that I purchased in brown bags. And tell them to put one item in one bag and the other item in the other bag. Then no need to tell me there is a charge for paper sacks.

It's a sad world when they have to charge you for something that was free years ago. Now supposing you want to get a box from their trash bin. Is there a coin operated machine for 25 cents for you to get a free box?

I better be quiet. They might get some ideas!
Oh by the way, I didn't get charged. I guess I have some clout! (LOL!)

KU wins again/Music program

I got see them both!! As soon as the concert ended we hightailed it home, listed to 98.7 FM and called S at half time (just before the concert started) and found out KU was ahead. Russell Robinson had a wonderful night!! He was the high scorer. We just got on the tail end of the game. We had heard it was a blow out, but then Georgia Tech was gaining on us. It was pretty darn scary towards the end of the game. Sherron Collins was practically trapped behind the baseline and he was "planning" to in bound the ball, but he had no room to move. So instead, thought he would bounce it off the leg of a GT player. Well, it got botched. GT player picked up the ball under the basket and it was a two-point game with just a few seconds left on the clock. At the time out, you see Bill asking Sherron what happened and Sherron trying to explain himself. Then someone fouled Sherron. The graphic on the screen said something about Collins and his free throw attempts. Well he proved them wrong and sunk those two free throws. (So there, ESPN). Then GT inbounded the ball and there was a bad pass and Sherron intercepted and put it in for a layup. Game ends!! What a thriller! K1's game is on Saturday and ours the following Saturday.
----------
It was really nice to see the new music teachers handle the kids this year. The new band teacher is quite young and is very professional. Compared with last year's teacher, he is a breath of fresh air! The bands seemed very polished. I was especially impressed with the 6th grade band. They actually played better than the previous ones and he had them playing more songs as well. The band teacher also directed the 7-8th grade singing. For his first time, Mr. Br did quite well. I was impressed. For the music teacher in J's grade, Ms. H, she was a youngin too. She had fun directing the kids and was quite at ease with the crowd. It was nice to see new blood pumping into the music program they did very well. I guess I had grown tired of Mr. W's "same old" Christmas programs. Thanks to the two new teachers!
-----
We also got to visit with my friend (Law) ex-boyfriend. He has been married to one of the music teacher's at our grade school for almost 3 or more years. It just seems so funny that we seem to talk to Law's ex's instead of her. I think DW is a nice person and it's too bad it didn't work out with them. If my friend would have stayed with DW then I think we would be closer (she would have stayed in A town). But since things happen for a reason, DW wouldn't have his young son and we wouldn't see him at all. Things work out the way that they should. So it was nice to talk to the "official page turner." :) Hopefully we will see him around more at H music functions.

Working in the afternoon

I stayed home after the "wild time" at Pastor B and L's last night. (JK on the "wild time" part!). I thought I should get some work done at home, what little I did. I did change table cloths, washed some clothes, wrapped some presents, and waited for the ice to melt before I drove out to work.

While I was walking around, I saw something buzzing around. What is it about these wasps and sunlight? It's like they wake up and buzz around the front foyer door. I like the warmer/sunnier weather, but I sure could do without the wasps. Maybe, once the new addition is built we will be rid of them. Then again I am not sure. It could be worse. They could be building their nests even higher and it make me wonder how we will get rid of these pests. Oh well, I shouldn't worry now about it.
-------
School will be out on Friday until next year (that always sounded so fun to say). No doubt the week they are out will go by too fast. Too fast for them maybe, and too slow for parents. I can hear it now, "Oh do we have to go to school NOW?" Then the parents would say, "I can't WAIT for you to go back to school."

I'll be missing the KU game tomorrow. This makes me very sad. I wish that I could go to both. I know that Flute would rather go to the concert than to stay home and watch the game. So I should just stop complaining. It's only one game. Hopefully S will be able to score the game. I always like to score the game to see what percentages the players are shooting or who was the leading scorer, etc. I always like to "beat" the TV when it comes to the stats. I learned how to score when I was still in high school. I wanted to be a sports writer. I wished I would have stuck to my "guns" and did that. But I wanted to teach History. Never got to do that either. Always go with your first thought. Maybe this works on careers and tests. But, it NEVER works on your choices in your life partner. Anyway, it didn't work with me. The guys I liked back in high school and college were pretty much wrong choices. It took me a while to find the right guy but that's okay it's not a race when choosing a life partner.

Now how did I get off on this subject? Probably the music I was listening to (Garth Brooks, "Unanswered Prayers." ). Hope everyone keeps well.

Hang in their Flute you'll get better everyday. I still have a little pain probably because of the way I move. Pray for Flute for her operation recovery and results.

Cool Stuff!

Tonight we were over at the Pastor's house and were treated to homemade soups, cheese, cheesecakes (L loves it, as I don't make it here), desserts and great fellowship and fun! While we were there Flute's Ja and kids were there. Ja had me ask K1 where he was going on Saturday. He was going to his first KU game!! The seats are going to be so great!! Not that general admission stuff we get but reserved and on the floor. Hopefully he will be near the KU bench, because that would be the place to be!!

You could be near the guys on the team, you could get your picture taken with the Big J or the Little J, you could actually shake hands with the coach (well, maybe) and the level of excitement would be great! You wouldn't have to stand like we do up in the GA seats and at the half or so perhaps you could win a tee-shirt (if they do that type of thing during that game). Imagine...looking up at the rafters of Allen Fieldhouse for the first time and seeing the retired jerseys and seeing the banner "Beware of the Phog." It will be awesome for K1. After the game, I would advise K1 to wait after the game for autographs of the players. The players are so nice!

K1 will want to go to the basketball camp in the summer. My J wants to go someday and I think he will, someday. K1 will want to go to more games and watch the seniors in the barnstorming tour. Have fun K1!! Take plenty of pictures of the team and ask Sasha to take a picture with you. Best places to eat after the game (other than the turnpike McDonald's ) would be Longhorn Steakhouse and the Salty Iguana. Or you can eat a slice of pizza or nachos before the game, the concession stands has it all!

Oh yeah, we are big time KU fans. ROCK CHALK JAYHAWKS!
--------
Today we went to the mall at W. It was a mess. One store was just crowded with people. I don't really like crowds at all. So I was hunting down stuff for S in the mall and it's hard to shop for people when they are there. And it's hard even if I have a list in my hand with pictures on them. I couldn't find anything that she had on her list. But when she walked in the store with me she could find tons of stuff. Sometimes I have the store personnel help me look and sometimes they just ignore that you are even in their store. I appreciate the ones who help me.

We went to Target then and I saw another family from H town (a teacher and her family). I look at all the stocking stuffers and think that J and S are too old for that stuff. I can remember putting in Barbies, weebles, and other trinkets that they could care less about now. Now I end up getting some gift cards (S you didn't read this tidbit of information.). I still have more shopping to do and heard there is more snow scheduled for Saturday.

Did I mention that I hate snow??

KU beats Ohio Bobcats

KU plays their first game at Kansas City's new Sprint Center. They wore red and the Ohio Bobcats wore green. How fitting! :) KU Basketball is now 10--0! Brandon Rush came back to the starting lineups replacing Rodrick Stewart, who has done a fine job since being in the starting lineups for the past 9 games. KU was pretty good from the 3 point area and not too bad at the free-throw line. Not perfect, but not bad. Cole Aldrich came in for a little in the first half and more in the second half. It's good to have him in there to give him minutes to play as he will improve over time. Leading the scorers for the 'Hawks was Mario Chalmers at 17 points, followed by Darrell Arthur at 14, Brandon Rush with 13, Darnell Jackson (who plays with emotion!) with 11, Sasha Kaun (coming off the bench) to score 8, and Russell Robinson, Sherron Collins, and Cole Aldrich each had 6 points. Jeremy Case shot in a 3 pointer, Rodrick Stewart was perfect from the free throw line with 2, and Connor Teahan had a nice layup with 2 points.

The next game for the 'Hawks will be in Georgia at Georgia Tech. I would love to see that game live. But because of the weather, they have rescheduled the Christmas program at J's school. S is going to watch and score the game for me. I will most likely miss it completely as J's grade has to stay for the entire program...through the 7th and 8th grade program. Hopefully, this won't take the whole night. I guess it will be good to see the new singing teacher and the new band teacher. Just to see how this new band teacher is and compare him with Mr. W. To see if there are good differences/improvements. So, it could be an educational experience. But drat! I will miss my 'Hawks. Thank goodness for DVR's!
------
Santa and Toy Boy is on Ch. 33 (the CW) at 10:30 on weeknights. These are such a treat to watch! They have Toy Boy and Montique the Moose and some wacky crazy hair guy. This version was recorded at KWCH and was shown around 6:30 in the evening. The copyright date was 1988! I would have loved to have J and S to be able to watch Santa Claus, but alas the man who portrayed him, Henry Harvey, died before my children were born. So they never got to experience Toy Boy (aka Kakeman). I loved it when they went "Zooming around the big wide world." I also liked when Santa read the Christmas story from the Bible and when Santa sang. Henry Harvey went to the Quaker church in W town as I had some friends who said they saw him at church. If you get a chance, be sure to watch Santa and Toy Boy (or DVR him for your kids!).

Double shirt/double sock weekend

Yep, the snow is here. A white coating of snow is falling down as it outlines fences, trees, garages, and houses. Some would say it looks "Christmas Like." I would say it just looks yucky and I can't wait for the sun to come out and melt the stuff. Perhaps, if you have never seen snow or live in areas where it doesn't snow, it looks beautiful but not to me. I see slick roads, snow-covered dogs, drifting and blowing snow. An inconvenience. I like my Christmas and New Year's brown, with a high of near 50. Guess I'm living in the wrong state. But it could be worse. I could be living in states way north where this snow is only a drop in a bucket. So for that I'm thankful I do not live up north.

I've got my double shirts and double socks on. Warming up next to the heater (when I'm not on the computer). I think of things to do. Clean, write, clean, bake cookies, eat cookies, eat in general, hot pizza, hot cocoa, hot bath, hot shower, summer. Ah summer...warmer temperatures. But then I start thinking tornadoes and you know what? I like the snow over that.

KU basketball is on today on ESPN2. They are playing Ohio State University at the new Sprint Center in Kansas City. I have heard that is some center! They have a brand new QuikTrip (QT) among other things. I'm hoping the 'Hawks will be able to win. It has been a week since they have played a game so hopefully they will still have their "edginess" type of play. Hopefully they will look sharp and play sharp. No fumble hands, or bad passes. Accurate shooting from 3 point distance and perfect from the free throw line. I hope I'm not dreaming this. Brandon Rush is scheduled to start today and I'm sure Sherron Collins would like to start too. The guys who have started of late, have done quite well. Rodrick Stewart, Mario Chalmers, Russell Robinson, Darrell Arthur and Darnell Jackson. Cole Aldrich is developing and Tyrel Reed is good if only he could keep his ankles from getting weak. I think KU has depth and potential. I just hope they continue their winning ways.

At church they were to have a "Lessons and Carols service" with special music and readings tomorrow. I'm not sure if it will be held. I haven't practiced my part yet. I'll probably be stuttering all over my words. Hopefully not. I read this same part last year, so I ought to do okay. Pray for me.

Stay warm today. Enjoy that cup of cocoa, baked cookie and sit back and watch the KU game at 4PM. Just stay safe!

Here Comes the Snow

I would love to sing "Here comes the Sun," by the Beatles, but unfortunately it doesn't look that good here. Weather forecasters has issued a Heavy Snow Warning for my area. I can only hope that they are wrong. But, I'm pretty sure they know what they are talking about. So I look at my window watching and waiting...hoping that there will be no snow.
-----
My friend flute came out of surgery okay yesterday. She should be coming home today, depending how she is feeling. I wished I could have come home earlier after my surgery but I had to spend 3 1/2 fun-filled days at the hospital. Glad that's over with. I wish that the bills were over with though. I was planning to save some money in order to maybe side the house with. But no! I get a nice hefty bill from the surgeon wanting the bonus money. I hope I have enough to claim big time on my tax bill. I'm going to check out about itemizing this year.
------
J got most of his braces off. He has lingual braces on now (permanent wire retainers) and we are waiting on his permanent teeth to come in. Then the orthodondist says we will be going into the second phase of braces. ("I don't think so, Tim," as Al Boreland would say on "Home Improvement.") In fact the orthodondist pretty much knows we won't be springing for more braces. First phase was only $3600 and second phase would cost the same amount. I need to save some money for their college education too. Plus, it is awfully hard getting taken out for doctor appointments and dentist appointments when you are in high school. Anyway, where I live. I lived in W town it would be much easier.
-------
Yesterday I went Christmas shopping. Yeah, big deal. I had limited time to spend at the mall and picked up two presents. So I guess I'll be doing the rush thing on the next weekend, weather permitting. Guess they will enjoy getting money if there are not many presents under the tree. The cat would probably rip into the presents anyway! He enjoys sleeping on the blanket underneath the tree.
-------
Today looks like a day to bake cookies, or clean house, or send out for pizza. Now if only we had a Papa John's Pizza here! AH!! My favorite pizza place. Hope your day is going well!

Understanding

My friend flute is going into surgery this morning. She is nervous as all get out. I know how she feels. Been there/done that over 13 weeks ago. She has never been put out, apparently, as that puts the fear in anyone. I have been put out for three times now. As Franklin D. Roosevelt used to say (yes, he was before my time. It's the History major coming out in me), "The only thing you have to fear, is fear itself!" That is so true. Because as I told her that you are so relaxed and incredibly sleepy that you just close your eyes one second and the next second bam! You are awake. "In a blink of an eye." So it's just when you are getting prepped and being wheeled into the operating room you are just ready to pop out of your skin. When I was being wheeled into the room, my thoughts were to just jump right off the bed and run away! But I couldn't. You think how long the surgery will take and you get scared. Like they tell you three hours, but that's mostly for your family to be waiting. You, on the other hand, it's like less than a nanosecond. The time warp effect. It's afterwards that you need to be concerned with. So pray for my friend flute!
------
Calm before the next storm rolls in. We are supposed to get 6 inches of snow between tomorrow and Saturday. Wonderful. :( So we are going to W town to take J to an appointment and Christmas shop. I have nothing at all under the tree. Probably a good thing. Sasha (the cat named after Kaun) would rip open all the packages. Or so I've heard.
------
Going to W to get J's braces off...maybe not ALL of them, but at least the herbst part. I can only hope and pray that J will be able to speak better without all of that stuff in his mouth. But then we get to look forward to retainers!! Now, I know that there maybe speech problems after this procedure is done as well..here we go again!
------
Finished typing in the recipes (that I have so far!) into the online program. There is still time to get more in as I have extended the deadline for another month. Then after that no more extentions if we want books by Easter. Otherwise we are looking at Mother's Day. It would be nice to have it before Mother's Day. So get those recipes in!! (ASP)...not as soon possible...it means "another shameless plug." The count so far is 152!! I want at least double that. I figure that would be at least 6 recipes or more from the ones who haven't handed stuff end.... which would make at least 23 people or more. You know who you are!

Avoiding the Ice Storm

H town was spared during this latest blast of ice. The kids didn't have school on Tuesday and thankfully we didn't have it that bad around here.

BUT...up in the other H town, where I am from, was another story. I heard that things look like a war zone up there with powerlines down and limbs all around. My mom is needing help clearing her driveway and yard. But thankfully, she too was spared from her electricity going out. She has talked to friends where their electricity is off and the temperature is dropping into the 40's. They have to let the water run as so they won't have frozen pipes inside. I remember how that was 3 years ago out here in our house! I never want to live through that again. Then I was talking with Pastor B and he knew of others that had it even worse. Someones electricity went out and the entire plugs and appliances blew out completely!! These people will be out of their house for quite sometime! Just when you think you have it bad, there is always someone who is way worse off!
------
J did not want to go to school today. Whenever there is a break (like Christmas break) he has a hard time wanting to go back to school. He's not wanting to see his friends or do the homework. He wasn't bored at all yesterday. He had his games and tormented the cat.

Or maybe it was the other way around, the cat tormented him. The cat wanted "his" couch to sleep on but J was in his place. So the cat started to snack on the tree again. There's something about wire and fake green branches that turns him on. I can only imagine what the cat will do to our Christmas presents! I should wrap up a fake one and see what he does with it. Maybe I should get the cat some catnip in the box! I can only imagine. S kept busy baking biscuits and working on homework. She wasn't bored.
-----
I have been typing cookbook recipes online. I've got a few more left. I fall asleep dreaming about cream cheese, chocolate, and other ingredients. I just gain weight by thinking about these recipes! Yet, somehow, I need more. Yes, another shameless plug. :) LOL!

Icky Ice storm coming!

Batten down the hatches! We've got a bad ice storm coming!! It's currently raining freezing drizzle. Just now they cancelled school. J was supposed to have a program tomorrow. I kind of hope that they cancel that! So now they have! Kids are happy about that. But, then again, I'll bet they will be bored. But, it will keep everyone safe!

The last really bad ice storm that we experienced was in '05. Hearing limbs cracking and breaking, I'll never forget that sound. Then one night we were up late and the lights were flickering. Then WHAM it was like a train it the house and everything went completely black! We knew that our power went out and later on found that the box was pulled completely off of the house! We had to stay with the inlaws for 3 days. The dog had to stay in our laundry room as it was below freezing and it was a mess! We didn't have the cat yet. School was cancelled then for like a couple of days. I just hope and pray that this ice storm doesn't pull a repeat performance over here. I do not want to lose electricity ever again! Driving isn't fun at all on this stuff either.

When I was a senior in college at SC, I drove my friend to GB who needed to see the eye doctor. So when we went up to the city the weather was just fine. Then on the way back freezing drizzle started falling. I was trying to pass someone (duh!) and felt the car wiggling back and forth, not normal. I stuck the break on and we skidded over in the wrong lane and I closed my eyes. I felt the car going in the wrong lane and the bumper ended up just touching a power pole. The car had gone over a ditch and we were up next to this pole. Some nice guys picked us up and drove us to their parents house. My friend called her dad (a teacher at my college) to help to get my car out of the ditch. My friend's nerves had gotten the best of her and she was sick to her stomach. My nerves were completely shot. I still remember that time. It was nearly 30 years ago that happened and to this day I cannot drive on the ice at all. Of course, I have other driving problems as well, which I will address at another time. So yes, I am very scared when it comes to ice!

I hope everyone will keep safe and warm during this icky ice storm. If you have to drive, be carefull!

Sleet!

The phone rang early this morning and I couldn't get back to sleep. The caller didn't leave a message. So I laid there in bed, unable to sleep and decided to walk upstairs to the kitchen. I looked out side and saw white on the streets. I checked the caller-id and found that it was L's dad. L's dad called to say that he thought church was cancelled.

Was it? We checked the news online and on television seeing nothing concerning the church. L's parents thought they saw the church name on the screen. We called Pastor B. Yes, we were still having church. What L's parent's saw was a cancellation for two church's in W town. Those two names contained our church name.

We get to church and noticed that someone did a u-turn in the sleet. We look in a closet for ice melt and find only a little bit. It was enough for church attenders to walk on (I hope). We are getting more sometime in the near future.
-----
There was also a problem from Christian Education. They could not find some "globes." Br and I looked all over. The smelly paint closet, the closet under the stairs, the old library room, an unused classroom, sewing rooms, and in the basement. We couldn't find them. They were to have them on hand for the children's story today. Well, since I'm like a "dog with a bone," I don't give up easy. They had to be somewhere in the church. So I come back to church after lunch and look in every room. Finally, I see a huge box in the teacher's room. I took off the Christmas stuff that was on the box and found the globes. So ended "The Case of the Missing Globes." Case closed. (Sounded like a Hank the Cowdog story, huh?)
-----
Hope the weather improves. If not, I have a lot of stuff to do here. Clean, type, plan, write, I won't be bored. Oh, and I could make some cookies! :)

Sasha sparks 'Hawks/Christmas Party

Another great game by the 'Hawks was played today. I think they took revenge on DePaul as last year they lost to this same team last year. Sasha Kaun, who hasn't starting lineups, came off the bench and scored 15 points. He was nearly perfect from the free-throw line and shooting field goals. Sherron Collins came off of the bench after being out of action since Nov. 11th, ended up shooting a couple of three pointers. Other high scorers were Brandon Rush and Darrell Arthur each with 13 points; Mario Chalmers had 12 points; Darnell Jackson had 8, followed by Russell Robinson with 7, Cole Aldrich and Sherron Collins each had 6, and Rodrick Stewart scored 4 points. The next game the Hawks will play will be in a week in KC at the Sprint Center. The students have finals week next week.
--------
We went to HI Christmas Party, L thought for sure the dinner started at 7 pm. So we leave the house at 6:30pm. When we get there everyone is going down the line getting food. We are the last to arrive. So I looked over at the dessert stating that there better be some pumpkin pie left or I won't be eating nothing!! We talk with the office help (now I know the voice with the person who answers the phone) and the younger employees are last in line too. They had a lot of vegetable salad (not my cup of tea...yep, I'm picky!) and some really great potatoes, bread and then the main meal. A choice between pork and beef. Both quite red. So I pick beef. I picked wrong! Yes, the pumpkin pie was still there.
We pick a table with R and K, Pastor B and L, and D and her husband. Very good table as we knew most everyone! We sit down on the table and underneath my placemat was a ticket. Pastor B was sure I won something. So I started to eat the beef...I tried...Pastor B asked me if I liked how it looked. It was RED!! So Pastor B and L advised me to get the pork instead. L gets me some, oh yeah much better. I ate one piece of the beef (ick!) I nearly chocked on it. Then I realize that if I did choke, I am sitting at the best table. All of these people know CPR. Well, I did win the Poinsetta centerpiece, that was nice. It would have been nicer if it was a cash prize! LOL!
The entertainment was a man by the name of Billy Riggs, from Austin, Texas. He is an illusionist and a motivational Christian speaker. He had an entertaining, humorous show and yet he had a wonderful underlying message. He was really great. For more information here is a link http://www.theattitudedude.com/.
If you are needing a motivational speaker, an illusionist for your party then please contact him. You will be glad that you did.
(TY TP for bringing him to the HI party!) :)

Someone's in the kitchen!

There used to be a segment on Ch. 10, called "Someones in the Kitchen with Todd," a few years back. The weather guy, Todd, would usually get some member of the audience to cook a dish on TV. This is where I picked up my recipe of Tater Tot Casserole. I really like the flavor, ingredients, and the ease of it. It's a hit in the family. Todd moved away to Seattle about thirteen years ago and he's doing the same thing on a TV station there. This time he is using local Seattle celebrities for his cooking segments. I have read this via the Internet.

Today I am in the kitchen baking a couple of batches of cookies which I found on the Internet. They are turning out pretty good. Usually for our church bake sale, I make my famous decorated sugar cookies and then an "experimental" cookie recipe as well. These are two experimental recipes and they taste great. It's a cold, rainy day and what better way to spend it but inside with my oven. I have made Gingerbread Teddy Bears (minus the molasses, but with butterscotch pudding) and Chocolate Crinkles. I liked them so much that I am baking a second batch for the family.

Oh yes, they will be in the Church's cookbook next year. Hint, hint! :)

Mark Mangino!

KU Football coach, Mark Mangino received an award National College Coach of the Year from the ESPNU/Home Depot Football awards in Orlando, on Thursday! For more an informational/inspirational read about Mark Mangino click on the following link: http://www.kansascity.com/180/story/370511.html

Congrats Mark Mangino on a great season!

Speech Decisions

During the summer we took J to an ear doctor and then he referred us to a center which specializes in speech help. Both the doctor and the center told us when school started to get a different speech teacher. I assured them that we would. It didn't happen. The teacher we wanted had gotten another job in W town and we were "stuck" with the teacher we have had since J was in pre-school.

So we made a decision since his speech problems are basically the same we decided we would end school intervention the end of December.

I know that the speech teacher is against this as is probably J's teachers. We didn't come to this decision in a quick way. We had been advised to do this for over 6 months. We know that J is still in error when he talks. So who's fault is it why he talks the way he does? Is it the speech teacher's methods? Does he need a new approach? Does he need a second opinion? Has he improved since she has had him for seven years? How many parents would put up with it this long if the speech teacher isn't making any improvements?

The speech teacher was incredulous when I informed her of our decision. Don't you just hate to deal with people like that? She kept saying "well do they think I am stupid?" No, " but they don't think that your methods are doing him any good."

I sent the information that they gave me and some different approaches for his speech problems. She did methods (from the sheet) that I didn't think would help him. In fact, it hasn't helped him at all.

Now we have to find someone else to help J. That's the problem currently. There is no one in this town to help. We could go to W town and ask the center to help him, but at what cost and what time of day? I wish there was a place that would help him on the weekends. I've been reading ways in which I can help him. I am praying that once his braces are off that he will get better at speech. I won't be able to secure a new person until at least the spring, I figure. But staying with this current teacher is not an option. Enough is enough. We need to move on and try a different approach.

Does anyone know of speech teacher/center to recommend to us? Would you stay with a teacher who hasn't made much progress in seven years? We did what we had to do, right or wrong.

KU Wins/Announcers

KU Jayhawks won again this time over Eastern Washington University 85-47. Darnell Jackson, who is now starting in place of Sasha Kaun, was the leading scorer with 17 points, followed by Darrell Arthur with 15 points and a beautiful 3-pointer. Doing great defensively was freshman Cole Aldrich. Fan favorite, Connor Teahan came off the bench to score 5 points. Tyrel Reed, rolled his ankle during the game, but game back into play. He's one tough kid!

I get spoiled listening to the Jayhawk TV announcers of Paul Splittorff (former major league baseball pitcher for the KC Royals) and Dave Armstrong (a former KSNW sports director). I never hear them saying anything derogatory against the 'Hawks. They talk about how many songs Aldrich has on his Ipod (5,000) and curious to what songs they could be. (Come to think of it, I'm curious too!). Sometimes on the KU Message Board they get down on Armstrong. He used to call Darrell Arthur, "Shady Arthur." His nickname was "Shady" or "Slim Shady," not how Armstrong puts it. Last year he was ALWAYS saying it. Armstrong also overuses the exclamation of "WOW!" when there is a great play. But I think that's characteristic of Dave Armstrong. Now he has a new freshman favorite, Connor Teahan. He has nicknamed him "Cool Hand Teahan," cute, it rhymes. I'm not sure what the Message board thinks though. "Split" on the hand, calls Mar--reo, Mare re0 most of the time. That gets on my nerves! Apparently they don't read the KU Media Guide, complete with pronunciations of Mario's name, and it isn't how he does it.

I love listening to the guys on the radio, Bob Davis and Chris Piper. They make things come alive!! If you are not near a TV or if you have to put up with the national announcers I tune to them. Of course, radio and TV are not in sync. So you either put up with the national announcers or if you REALLY can't stand them, I just go ahead and listen to Bob and Chris and turn off the sound of the TV.

Working at Home

Last night I decided to put together a flyer for my Church's cookbook. I found some interesting vintage cookbook cover and was just about to put the above picture on the flyer. But then I saw the woman holding a wooden spoon in one hand and holding a cigarette in the other hand. I thought, "No WAY can I do that!" But I did find some acceptable images that I added on. L enlarged the images and it looks pretty good. I like collecting cookbooks and I do not have very many old ones. The covers on these old cookbooks are vintage! One featured a brand new Kenmore grill and I would say that was probably a 1950's cover; another cover featured a woman in an apron cooking with her daughter (in a smaller version apron) baking cookies. If you take a look at the hairstyle then I would say this was a circa 1940's or maybe 1950's. Then there is another cover with a woman all dressed up (June Cleaver like) showing a cake she made with her new Hamilton Beach mixer.

If anyone from my church is reading this blog...I need your recipes! :) Nothing like a shameless plug! LOL!

Energy savings/bills

While I was at my job today cleaning, I was thinking about changing light bulbs. Why not go green? I would get the new bulbs in place and the church could be saving energy. See link: http://www.gelighting.com/na/home_lighting/products/energy_smart.htm#benefits

So I went downstairs into one of the bathrooms. I had already changed one room and liked the result. So I replaced the 150 wt. bulb downstairs with a 100 wt. new fluorescent one. Then I went back upstairs to one of the bathrooms noticing there was only one bulb in a fixture. That's because whoever changed the bulb before, broke one off in the socket. (don't you just hate it when that happens?). Then the other light fixture only had 25 wt. bulb in another area. No wonder it was dark in that room. I think that whoever uses that room will be pleased now as they will be able to see a little more. I started formulating a list to see how many energy savings bulbs I would get at our "what's it for store." I go into the WIFS and there is the old bulbs and then there are the energy savings ones. One in a package, that is. At Wally World I had purchased some of these bulbs. We got six for like $9.00. Well one, at the WIFS, was $6.99!!
(Are they out of their minds?) Needless to say I skipped buying those bulbs. I guess I won't be buying "green" at the WIFS! Maybe another time the church will go green. But not now.
-------
I got my hospital bill today for my operation. Of course, this was my second notice what the charges are. They told me to contact my insurance company as they hadn't paid the hospital yet. Wonderful. :( So we call our insurance company and they just "happened to pay for it TODAY!" I wonder if we would have called them earlier would they have paid for it before THIS time? I asked L sheepishly, "Okay, so what do we have to pay?" Preparing for the worst possible senario on what we owed them and if we needed to go for a second or third mortgage on the house.
He answers me, "Eighty-eight dollars."
Flabbergasted I answer: "WHAT?! Are you sure?"
He assured me that was the quote that the insurance company gave him.
I'll never say another bad word about the insurance anymore if this is true. I'll believe it until I see it in writing. Now all I have left is my bill for my specialist and the local hospital for a simple blood test. I really felt like I REALLY got ripped off over there and the next time I need a test like that I'll just go up to W town for a cheaper price.
-------
Hope everyone else is not bogged down in bills. Say a prayer for my friend Flute's operation and my pastor as he is having back pain.

Orange Bowl Bound!

Well it seems as if instead of KU getting to play in the Fiesta Bowl in Arizona, that they will be playing down at Dolphin Stadium, in Miami Florida in the Orange Bowl. The last time that KU was at the Orange Bowl was 39 years ago...1969! I remember that game, I do. I was as old as S at the time and Bobby Douglass was the quarterback. There was 12 men on the field for KU (1 too many) and they lost the game. Hopefully the Hawks will do much better. They will be facing Virginia Tech.
------
Talking about bowl games, how about the names of the many bowl games? Of course, we are all aware of the Rose, Sugar, Orange Bowl, Cotton, and Fiesta. But when I was younger that was about it on the bowl games. Now they call these basic bowls as: All-State Sugar bowl, formerly called the Nokia Sugar Bowl, the SBC Cotton Bowl (I'm sure it's now called the AT &T Cotton Bowl), the Orange Bowl (called the Fed-ex Orange Bowl), and the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

There are even MORE bowl games: Poinsettia Bowl, Motor City Bowl, the Emerald Bowl, the New Mexico Bowl, the Las Vegas Bowl, the New Orleans Bowl (wait a minute, isn't that where the Sugar bowl is?), the Music City Bowl, The Champs Sports Bowl, the PapaJohns.com bowl, the Car Care Bowl, the Hawaii Bowl, the Humanitarian Bowl, the Chick-Fil-A Bowl, the Capital One Bowl, the Insight Bowl, the GMAC Bowl, the International Bowl (played in Toronto, thus the name!), the Texas Bowl (wait, isn't this the Cotton Bowl), the Alamo Bowl (naturally played in San Antonio), the Armed Forces Bowl, the Outback Bowl, the Sun Bowl, the Independence Bowl, and the Gator Bowl.

I suggest that they would actually have EVEN more bowl games. They could have the Pizza Hut Bowl, the Cracker Barrel Bowl, the Target Bowl, the Nike Bowl, the Addias Bowl, the Old Navy Bowl, the Gap Bowl, the Dunder Mifflin Bowl, or the Vanish Toliet Bowl. They could have countless more of bowl games enabling other teams with so-so records throughout the season to be able to go into a game. You never know they might create some of these in the near future. :)

KU Basketball wins against USC/KU Football

This was definitely a heart attack game! It looked pretty bad in the first half when all the announcers talked about the greatness of OJ Mayo. KU did look pretty tired in the first half and I thought a couple of calls were wrong. Our shooting percentage for the 1st half was only 34% but USC's percentage wasn't much better at 37% from the field. There were some shots that KU tried to make and they ended up being air balls. The team just didn't look sharp in their shots like they usually are. USC lead KU at the half 27-25.

But after the half KU came back to take charge. Mario (pronounced Mar--reo, not Mare reo, as the announcers kept saying) Chalmers had scored only 3 points in the first half. But by the end of the game he had scored 17 more points the second half. He had a clutch 3 point shot towards the end of the game. It was an NBA 3-pointer! It was great!! Great for KU! That quieted the crowd of 10,000 at the Galen Center (this is my brother's name!). Sasha Kaun surprisingly hit 3 free throw shots (he must have been practicing and it showed) from the line. OJ Mayo played the entire game without a rest on the bench. Russell Robinson guarded him well and OJ ran out of steam by the end of the game. KU beat USC 59-55 with Mario Chalmers leading the 'Hawks with 20 points, followed by Darrell Arthur with 10, Darnell Jackson, 9, Brandon Rush with 6, Sasha Kaun and Russell Robinson with 5 a piece, and Roddrick Stewart with 4.
------
KU Football--The latest rankings came out today and since KU didn't play a game yesterday, they DROPPED in the polls. Last week they were rated 5th and this week they went down to 8th!! Ohio State, who didn't play yesterday either, came up in the polls to be in the top three. Now how is that fair??? Why did KU drop and they didn't play? Is it because of their one and only loss to Missouri? Is it because KU isn't known for their football teams? Is it because we played "cupcake" teams earlier on. Oklahoma's only loss was at the hands of Colorado, a team in which KU beat at Boulder. Yet, because OU beat number1 they go higher than KU and MU. Where is the reasoning behind this madness? It will be interesting tonight to find out which bowl game KU will be playing in. KU was hoping they would play in the Fiesta Bowl. Now they are hoping it is at least the Cotton Bowl.

I'm still shaking my head over this injustice!

Expensive Christmas toys for kids

Now there's an expensive pony!! Butternut can ALMOST do it all! He eats a "carrot" and he whinnies, you can brush his mane and tail. He responds to your voice when you talk to him. And if you are tiny enough you can ride him! My friend "Flute's" daughter K3 wants one. This one was a Christmas sale item at $225. Now, the price of the pony is $250!! This is such a horrible price!! The pony runs on 6 "D" Batteries. The advertisers of this toy are shameless. Any little girl might want this but, at such a price. NO WAY!

So I suggested to "Flute" how about a real life kitty? This cat is made by the same company. When you call the kitty he meows at you. You pat him, he purs. You put your hand over the kitty's eyes and he will meow. The only thing different between this mechanical cat and a real one is that he doesn't try to bite you, scratch you, no shedding, no kitty-litter box, and no food is required. If my child (was young enough) and wanted a cat I would get her this one for under $40 just to try it out.

Gone are the days when your little girl wanted a baby doll. No batteries required and plenty of imagination. Or how about "Barbie" dolls? Now, of course these dolls have grown up and are not their mom's "Barbies." Not only are there Barbie dolls, but there are Bratz dolls too. Cabbage Patch dolls of the 80's were pretty popular toys.

Gone are the days for simple toys for boys. Like buying sports equipment for your boys. A simple football, baseball, soccer ball, or baseball isn't good enough. You have to have electronic games for you PlayStation's, Wii, Gameboys, and your personal playstation, and of course your computer.

No one wants to get socks or shirts for Christmas. Nor would any child want a book for Christmas.

I used to be thrilled to get a record album for Christmas or some other simple surprise. But now things aren't simple and some things cost too much.

Now my age is showing!
