Halloween thoughts

Some people "dress" their house up to look festive during Halloween. They have pumpkins around, cobwebs, and decorative spiders (as opposed to the real ones I see at church). Everyone drives by their house and thinks, "Hey this would be a great place to trick or treat. I'll just bet they will have lots of yummy treats." Then when Halloween comes around the decorative house goes dark and the occupants do not hand out treats. What a rip off! If you are not going to hand out treats or even be home, why are you decorating your house? Don't do it.
-----
One Halloween (1991) it snowned!! It was icy and we were living somewhere north of our present location. We had like three kids come by. I couldn't believe ANYONE would dare to come out to trick or treat. So when they came to our house we only gave them boxes of raisins. Talk about a rip off! I feel ashamed for even admitting that I did this.

Since having kids I have bought zip-loc bags and stuffing them with at least 3 items. (Kit Kats, M and M's, or 3 Musketeers, sometimes Oreo Cookies and Teddy Grahams). I find this so much easier than handing the kid one measly piece of candy and sending them on their way. No one gets ripped off, everyone gets treated equal.
------
S went to A town and got a variety of treats. Doritos, crackers, candybars, and one person had a treat bag with penny candy in it. My age is showing when I use the term "penny candy." This includes teeny tootsie rolls and teeny gum. Back in the dark ages when I was a child we used to get that penny candy, something like 5 little piece of candy for a penny! Ah, those were the days.
-------
Since coming to this town I always noticed that the kids soap the bank and the fountain on main street. When I lived in the bigger H town that was unheard of to do this. But, my mom who grew up in a little town told me this was a common practice. The only thing was, that sometimes in this town is the "words" they write and that's not too common. So tomorrow morning I will have to tour the town and and see the shaving cream and toliet paper covering main street. The city crews will be busy!

Restrictions lifted

I got all of my restrictions lifted today and can go officially back to work. Dr. C wasn't there, but his assistant, Dr. S told me that I could do the things I did before surgery, but to ease into it. YEA!! I can take tub baths again (if I want to) as I got used to taking showers. So I've been working out at church today and my kids are so happy that they don't have to work out there anymore.

I've made some little minor changes since coming back. I am letting L still handle the big vacs at work and he's in charge of doing any moving of tables, etc., mostly the things I don't like doing or feel is a little heavy in lifting. I am listening to my MP3 player instead of my radio, so therefore, I'll be downloading more music on it as I know the order of songs on what I currently have.

The 6 weeks vacation was a nice rest. I think next time if I want a vacation like this then I should just take it without going through major surgery! LOL!

I'm baaaaaack!!!

9 more weeks

Nope J did not get his appliance or braces off. He has to wait 9 more weeks to get the appliance off and probably another 9 months or more to get the braces off depending on how quick he looses his teeth, which isn't going very fast. One baby tooth needs to be extracted in about 3 weeks (or sooner). I don't know why these baby teeth are sticking around but the tooth fairy is getting anxious for them to pop out!
------
Tis the season...It's Christmas time!! It's not Halloween tomorrow, not according to the stores that I shop in. Stockings, ornaments, trees, and wrapping paper are in stock. Don't lose your chance to get some "Spongebob SquarePants Wrapping Paper," for your kids this year, that print could sell out anytime!

Also, I was walking around Target today and saw some plastic tongs that will scoop up the snow for you to make the perfect snowball. Now you don't have to worry and get frostbite on your hands to make the perfect snowball, you get these plastic tong things and it will make your snowballs for you. Then, I saw plastic forms to make "bricks" for your igloo. Gone are the days where you actually formed these bricks with your own two hands. Mom won't have to worry anymore if "Billy" or "Cindy" will get frostbite playing in that awful snow. No more wet mittens or gloves, you've got your plastic snowball maker and your plastic igloo brick maker. It kind of takes out the fun though, doesn't it?
---------
Too bad the Pony Express isn't still up and running. The mail these days (anyway my bills) seem to be getting lost between the post office and the companies. I have had two in the past week where a company claims that they haven't gotten paid. Someone is loosing the bills. Is it the companies or is it the US Mails? Maybe the Pony Express could have done better. I guess this is a vote for doing all of your bill paying electronically. But, if you put a certain set payment in, you really couldn't pay extra, could you? Writing a check, varying the payment is easier, anyway, I used to think so untl now.
-------
Tomorrow I get to see if I'm cleared to lift or vacuum. It is still painful if I lift my feet really high to kill a fly. (This is if I'm on the phone and my hands aren't free). Guess next time I should use a fly swatter and quit going with my instincts. Check in with me tomorrow.

Hope I don't see Bambie crossing the road. On the way out to Wichita today I saw two dead deer. Two too many, in my opinion.

Back to work...sort of..

I went out today to church to clean up. I had been doing a little bit before like "supervising" how the work was going, etc. and picking up some trash. But today I actually did a little more than supervising. I was out there for an extended time wishing that I had my MP3 player with me.

Then I saw an "old friend" Mr. Spider in one of the rooms (flute's room to be exact). I greeted him with a "Agggh!!" You know, the normal greeting, that I give to spiders. But this spider was Gihugic! Ginormous! It was like a small version of a tarantula...I am not kidding. (Should have trapped it for Ed V. and /or Brad S.) I tried stomping on it and this stealthy thing kept on moving. Then I threw down a book, it was heavy enough that it wiped out the spider!! I kept the book against the creature until L came out to church to pick it up.

I thought about vacuuming or lifting something and I thought, "Eh, I better not." As I am not officially cleaned to lift anything. It about kills me to lift a gallon of milk out of the fridge! So I'm not sure what and when I'll be able to lift anything.

Two more days and I'll be back in full force, maybe. It's nice to be back on the job...sort of.

KU Football record 8---0!!

The last time KU football had a record of 8 wins and no losses was back in 1909!!! My grandmother was a mere 20 years old and graduated from high school that year!! She had not yet met my grandfather, a Welsh immigrant.

A record held since 1909!!! WOW!! KU is really doing great. They were ranked number 9 in the country in this weeks poll. ESPN announcers say that KU has played some "cupcake" teams to get to this ranking. Call it what you want, but KU football is a force to be reckoned with! This team staring Reesing, Talib, and Meier are doing so well. The offense works well and the defense seems to come through each gameday. Mangino can really coach this team!

The final score tonight was KU 19 and Texas A and M 11.

One final side note...Texas A &M's mascot...Reveille..is a cute Collie (she looks just like Lassie)! They have had many past "revilles" and they are all buried at the A&M stadium...strange but true! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reveille_%28Texas_A%26M%29

One final note: ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK! :)

I Smell Smoke!!

I smell it in my house!! The next door neighbor has started up his smokey stove pipe tonight!!! UGH!! I hate this thing! I have hated it ever since I have smelled it in my house!! I love my neighboorhood but hate fall/winter because of their "heating" oils.

I know this is not healthy at all if I can breathe it in my house. My windows and doors are completely closed!! Yet, I still smell this stuff. Now we have to look into getting new windows on my north side, IF indeed that will stop the nasty fumes from coming in.

Why can't the city just take this thing down and condemn it? Flute, be expecting a call into J from us because I just can't take the smell. It is especially bad at night when I am trying to sleep and in the morning when I am taking my kid to school. The smoke just billows into my backyard...we have pictures to prove it.

These people either need to raise their stove pipe, burn clean wood in it, clean it, and/or knock it off. I would love to get a great big fan (if only I could do this) and blow it back in their house just to see how they like to smell it.

I wish we could build a huge wall around our house so the clean air can be seeping in instead of this smoky stuff.

I don't want to move, but yet what would be the solution? They could take it down, they could raise it up. But for us to accept how it is now is just ridiculous!

I hate this time of year especially because of my neighbor's smoke stack. Why don't they move?

Taking a leap of Faith!

Since my operation I have had a lot of time to think and read about what kind of project to take on for my church. They are currently doing various fundraisers around the church to raise money to remodel the kitchen and beautify the front entrance. Granted, I didn't have to think of a project to help raise money as I am not on the committee at all.

But as I was sitting around, laying on the couch getting this wonderful food from various church members, I was wanting most of these dishes with recipes. I went to my cookbook area and noticed that I had two cookbooks from my church. One was published in 1983 and the last one in 1988...nearly 20 years ago!! Now, there has been many different people who have been going to church after 1988 (myself included). It got me thinking that a great fundraiser for the church is to create a NEW cookbook.

So I checked into the publisher of the 20 year old cookbook plus another publisher of a church cookbook. I have two different companies to choose from OR we could just put it together here in town. I told one of the persons who is on the fundraising committee and decided to go ahead and pursue it further. I guess, I just do not like to sit on an idea for very long. So I put my idea as an announcement in the upcoming church bulletin hoping that I'll get some help, etc. After talking to the previous chairman of the 20 year old cookbook, I felt like yes this was a good idea to begin asking for recipes.

Today I get an email from the fundraiser person who suggest that I go to another group to get it going. But, I have taken a "leap of faith" so to speak to just go ahead and drum up support starting on Sunday.

I wasn't planning on spearheading this project. It just happened. So flute, if you're out there reading this, help me!! Or whoever else is reading this. All sales that we make on the prospective cookbook will be going toward the building fund. I just want to contribute something and hope I don't fail! :)

Ramblings...

The speech teacher at J's school keeps sending us tongue depressers and mouth swabs, she expects us to do as she does on helping him in speech. Well, we have our own ideas and are going with "our" methods. I took "flute's" advice and decided we do know J better than the speech teacher does. We don't like her methods at all and I can't wait for the day that he is out of that speech teacher's room, which will be around Christmas break. (Nice present, huh?) J gets the braces off in a week!!! Hopefully that will help too.
-----
I've been working on a project for my church. Not sure if anyone else has thought of it but currently keeping it underwraps for now until I get the financial details together, etc. I have 3 different ways of doing this. First I 'll have to get the proposals ready and talk to FP, then probably there will be a need to get a committee together, then we will have to get the whole church involved. It's quite a process!! But I think it would be worthwhile...it hasn't been done in quite a while. But like I said, there could be others who have thought of this idea and once again, I'll be the last to know!
------
I've been enjoying my subscription to Netflix. Seeing a TV series that used to be on the Disney Channel, "Road to Avonlea." It has been a real treat just to rent these DVD instead of having to buy the series. I have found a lot of rare finds that Netflix has in their collection.
------
Doctor bills keep coming in the mail ever so often. They are VERY high. I have talked to another person who had the same operation as I did and their insurance paid 100% on their bill. I wish I had that particular company covering me!! But I don't think my insurance company is paying 100% at all, :(!

Good news our friend B seems to be doing better! We still continue to pray for his recovery!

KU Basketball Game!

Today at 9 AM I was told by S to be sure to order the basketball tickets to an upcoming game in November.

So when it turned 9 AM my hot little finger was on the button to buy the tickets online. Nothing happened. It went to another screen telling me that my computer was not accepting cookies. Then it explained on that page how to fix your computer so it would go through. I tried this procedure several times. I even set my computer to accepting all cookies. It did not work. I called L and I was doing the right things to precipate the computer to "get it together." Sometimes we have problems with this computer, but maybe this time it wasn't our fault.

I found the toll free number to call the ticket office and after a wait of 10 minutes (of course it seemed longer) I got the ticket person at KU. So we got tickets to the Northern Arizona game. Hopefully the weather will be good that day. We don't need any ice storms or snow storms. This will be a different way of celebrating "Thanksgiving," but a fun way too.

I thought calling the toll free number for reservations at our "favorite hotel" would be cheaper than online. It was not. The little foreign guy from the toll free number, quoted me a price and it was higher than what was online. So I couldn't go for that. Maybe, if I would have called the local hotel number I would have gotten a better price. Maybe I should try this out next time.

I am just so excited to be able to see the 2007-08 Jayhawks Men's Basketball Team play that day!! We are always pumped when it comes to going to a KU game!!

KU Football 7-0!!

WOW! The KU Jayhawk Football team is having an excellent season. Their record is now 7 wins and no losses. Yesterday they beat the Colorado Buffaloes in Boulder!

This is their best record since 1995!!

KU is most famous for their basketball teams, but this year in football is proving to be one of the better seasons in recent years. These players are ready to "go bowling" by this seasons end. I can remember when they went "bowling" back when Bobby Douglass was a quarterback (I think they played in the Orange Bowl); when John Riggins played for the 'Hawks; and in recent times (I think it was 1995) when the team played in Hawaii on Christmas day!

Next week KU plays Texas A and M out at College Station, TX. Just hope the 'Hawks can keep the momentum going!

Music in Grocery Stores

This is going to be one of these "old people," blogs. The kind where I say, "I can remember when, etc."

I can remember when I used to go to the grocery store and they would play this hideous music. No beat, just some old generic junky music that I wished that they would turn off. Hardly music to shop by or you would want to shop by. Music that would make you run out of the store not wanting to be in there any longer than you possibly had to be. You know, that type, the elevator music stuff. Ick!

Well today I was in my favorite grocery store in my hometown (my first hometown) and I could actually name that tune they were playing in less than three notes. (I would have done great on "Name that Tune," provided that they would ever bring that show back!) It was a song by Jan and Dean called "Deadman's Curve." Not only could I name that tune, I actually remembered the lyrics. Here I was singing this song, softly under my breath while S was rolling her eyes saying, "Well that's a stupid song."

In my mind it was a memorable song made back in the early 60's when the Beach Boys were popular too, I think before the British Invasion. It was a ballad about Jan Berry's actual accident driving on Deadman's Curve in California. But then I realized that song was nearly 43 years old!! WOW! No wonder S thought the song was weird.

Then I got to thinking there would be no way this type of song would be played in a grocery store setting back in the early 60's. No, we would have to put up with that "music for elevators" or that old stuff made popular in the 40's. I wonder who determines what music to play in the grocery store? Is "Deadman's Curve" an appealing song for someone to buy cheese, cookies or something from the Chinese deli??

Can you imagine what type of music will be playing in grocery stories in 20-30 years? Music by Soulja Boy, Maroon 5, 50 Cent, and Nickelback will probably be played and I can hear S being able to know these songs with her kid looking like she has lost it. Just wait, it'll happen!

Teacher conferences at the HS

Not knowing what to expect since this is our first experience with conferences at HS, we decided to come a little late. We should have came right at the time that they opened, 5 pm. We collected the grades from the counselor and the various teachers of the high school had tables around the hall way.

We looked around for a teacher whom S was making a B in. We decided to go for the typing teacher so sitting on "blocks" we didn't know who was in line first. We thought we were first; we were last. So we moved around until we saw a teacher who was not busy or didn't have a line. So we went to S's easier classes. The teacher's didn't keep us long as we didn't have any questions and S was doing well. We went down the hallway I stood, what seemed like forever, to talk to the Science teacher. It's too bad that the HS couldn't provide more chairs for the parents to sit on. Finally I HAD to sit down. Since I just got out of the hospital 4 weeks ago (which doesn't seem that long ago) I decided to rest my bones and sit down elsewhere until that teacher was ready.

We noticed that one student had his step-dad and mom there and they HAD to discuss every little detail!! Meanwhile the lines to see that particular teacher grew longer and longer. If they had THAT much to talk over they should have just called them earlier or emailed them. There were other parents waiting! It seemed as if we were following these people. UGH! Roll eyes!
So since there were so many chairs (not), I had to sit elsewhere while L saved our place in line. I started talking to another student's mom and she told me about her son and Math. They had some strategy on how to do better. Sounded like a good plan to me too.

Finally after talking to the last teacher, S's favorite, not hardly. We needed to talk to the counselor. He was the most helpful! When we finished we noticed we had been there for 90 minutes!! I was worn out!!

We checked who made the honor roll. S did but not the one she really wanted to be in. It's hard to be perfect when you are taking so many challenge courses and hardly any "fluff" courses. Maybe she will be able to do it in the 2nd nine weeks. Quite possibly she will be able to do it second semester. But knowing who made the top grades makes her want to do even better. Her grades were pretty good, in my opinion, but I know she really strives for perfection.

The Day After

After the big blowup of the speech teacher yesterday, which I tossed and turned over last night getting hardly any sleep, took a turn for surprisingly a better!

I collected all of my information from Heartspring, making copies and including some tongue exercises that they suggested the speech person do down here in little ol' H school. I thought, well it couldn't hurt to send it all. So today after J got back from school he said that he had an envelope of stuff from the speech teacher.

"Uh, oh," I immediately thought, "Did she rip up the reports? Was she going to send her own report and put me in my place?"

I asked J what went on in speech today. He said they did "tongue exercises." Hmm, I guess she read the information. I asked him if she had ever done that before. He said "no."

Maybe things will change, hopefully for the better. I wondered if she was trying to make ammends for what she said to me yesterday? Could she bend? Will this "new" method work? She sent home the tongue exercises (maybe she made her own copies) along with 5 mouth swabs and checked on what we should do. I am guessing (since she didn't enclose instructions) that we are to work with him and send the info back to school with him. I guess??

I guess the old saying is true "You can teach an old dog new tricks." And hopefully this is true in her situation. Stay tuned.

What I learned on my Summer Vacation

This was how I addressed the subject of J's speech problem to his regular teacher and to his speech teacher. The regular teacher understood my frustrations with what to do. She had J three years ago as a student and knew of his problems. I told her that we were "banking" on getting another speech teacher through the school system. Well, that fell through in August as that teacher had obtained another position in Wichita.

So here we were back to square 1. The teacher whom we've had to deal with since pre-school. The teacher that our ENT doc said that we needed to get someone new. The teacher who said she wouldn't be offended if we got another teacher.

HA! Yeah, right she wouldn't be offended.

She was PLENTY offended when I told her what I learned on my summer vacation. She said, "So basically they are telling me I am stupid?" Blinking her eyes, shaking her head and twirling her glasses angrily facing me. I said, "Well, no... they just think we need a different person." She taps her fingers on the desk. (after all she was the one who said he had plateaued in his speech, which I told the ENT and to which he replied, "her methods have plateaued.") . The speech teacher opens her grade book pointing out that yes he was 80% in her room but no carry over in the classroom. She puts on her glasses, peering over them staring at me. I feel like this time I am the student. I do not like that feeling. I proceeded to tell her what the ENT said and she disagreed. I look down and tell her I have the information at home and that I need to get with my doctor to arrange for someone new to take over his case. (usually I do not look down but don't like the way she is looking at me). I told her furthermore, that I would definitely would like to end this in December.

"So," she says peering over her glasses at me, "Do you want me to stop working with him now or in December?"

Oh, how I'd like to say, "RIGHT NOW!" But I hold my tongue (which is probably a first) and say, "Let me see what person my doctor will be lining us up with. Then we'll see what happens. But I definitely want him out in December."

"You'll have to sign a paper on that," she says still looking at me in that condescending look teachers give students.

"I will," I answer. Then I leave. I can still feel the daggers in my back as I walk out the door.

I felt like I did the right thing by telling her what I found out. I am sure that she expected me to say, "Oh you know you were right he has plateaued and I am so happy to have you for a speech teacher because you know so much more than my ENT and Heartsprings combined."

Dream on lady.

Free at last!

I had a great report at my doctor's office today. I have been cleared for driving!! Hooray!! 4 weeks of not driving anywhere has made me feel like a caged animal or a prisoner! So get to test out what it's like to drive today. I also got to "ditch the motorized cart" at Wal-Mart. I walked around and was actually mobile. I felt so "tall" walking around the store and not getting winded. It's great to feel better again.

While at Wal-Mart we heard that "BP's car" was ready at the Wal-Mart automotive desk. L and I looked at each other and said, "He actually gets his car serviced here?" BP is one of the local TV weatherman on Ch. 10. Immediately I am thinking "now what was the thing that I needed in automotive?" (Just to see what he looks like "off-camera." ) I thought now wouldn't it be cool if we were in a Wal-Mart in Larry Town and heard, the following announcement, "Bill Self your car is done." Could you imagine the rush of people going to the automovtive department just to see him?

Every car that left Wal-Mart this afternoon, I kept wondering was that BP's car? Pretty neat for us folk from H town to see a "TV personality," in Wichita! Later we went to Borders and wondered where KS (from Ch. 12) was as we have seen her there. :)

Bummer...Late Night was not Free access!

I was all set to get "Late night in the Phog" on my computer. I was going to sit back and watch all of the skits and the hoopla, just like I did last year from Jayhawk Access.

Well after a delay on my computer I get on the site and it says "this event is not free." Sigh! Now that REALLY makes me feel bad. I had promised the kids that we would go to "late night" this year, but since I had the surgery planned I had to renege on my promise. Then I said, "Well it will be on the computer, just like last year." It was on the computer, but unlike last year it wasn't free. I would have had to shell out $10.00 to get the live feed. $10.00 for the basketball preview and I would have gotten to see the football games this month for that price too.

I have read the Jayhawk boards and a lot of their people were disappointed too. Many of the alumni who live away from Lawrence and Kansas wanted to see "Late night" too for free. If I would have lived in Lawrence I could have gotten the live feed free through Sunflower Cable. If I wouldn't have had my surgery scheduled when I did we might have gotten into Allen Fieldhouse with a can of food and virtually free. If I lived in Lawrence, wow!! Maybe we could go to more games. If I would have been an alumus of KU maybe I could get some season tickets.

Life is full of "ifs" and "maybes." There are no solid guarantees. Maybe next year we will go to "Late Night in the Phog"... maybe.

Countdown to Late Night in the Phog!!

Here it is KU Basketball season!!! Tomorrow will be "Late Night in the Phog," in Lawrence on Internet Access!! It is always exciting to see the start of a new basketball season. To see the older players return and the new kids playing their first year of KU basketball.

The excitement of these kids taking the floor for the first time in front of full house. Can you imagine the lights, the sounds? The announcer shouting, "AND NOW INTRODUCING YOUR 2007-2008 KANSAS JAYHAWKS!" The band playing in the background, students cheering, and the hometown crowd filled at the capacity at Allen Fieldhouse watching the players run onto the floor and taking some practice shots. What an electrifying place to be that night!! Seeing Big Jay and Baby Jay strut their stuff and in rhythm with the band.

I can picture it. As last year we went to our first KU basketball game and saw all the hoopla. We all wanted to go to "Late Night" this year but because of my operation, we couldn't go. My kids were both greatly disappointed. We will be planning at least 2 or more trips up to KU and secure some basketball tickets to go to some games.

This year the seniors are: Sasha Kaun, Russell Robinson, Jeremy Case, Rodrick Stewart, and Darnell Jackson. May all of the Hawks have one great season!

Maybe this will be KU's season to do well this season and beyond.

Doctors and their patients

Have you ever had a new doctor or a specialist that you needed to go to for a special condition/reason? Are they hard or easy to know? What struck you about their personality (if any)? What type of bedside manners did they have or did not have?

I can remember when I first got my family practice doctor as a single adult. I met him in the emergency room at a Wichita hospital. He was just starting out his practice and I was in need of a doctor. What made me use him as a doctor? It was his bedside manner. Okay, let's be honest here, it was because he was single and nice looking. Then he had a great "pickup line," for me. "You look like someone who works here." I laughed and wished I did work there with him. He talked with me about my injured knee (at the time) and told me a story about how he injured his leg. I could picture everything he told me. It was then I knew I wanted him for my doctor. His bedside manner was friendly. This was nearly twenty-five years ago. Since then we both got married (obviously to different people) ; delievered both of my children; and was through it all with my miscarriages, etc. I trust this man. He will be my family doctor until he retires.

My son had a pediactric medical problem when he was born. So my Dr. J sent us to a pediactric specialist. He was gruff and we didn't like him at all. We called him (not to his face) Dr. Hairy Hands. I would have questions (that my Dr. J told me to ask him) and he would say, "Oh there's another worried mother." Like this was a bad thing and made me feel less than human. I told him, "No. I am not asking this. I am asking this for my doctor." So there. He wasn't a very nice person. I have heard since that other doctors say the same thing about him.

This past summer I was referred to two other doctors for my "condition." I originally asked to see a Dr. Ed but he was busy and referred me to his associate. When I met Dr. C, he shook hands with me and L very warmly. He explained what my condition was and what steps to think about. He didn't pressure me but was very reassuring. I liked him. Sure he was a lot different than my Dr. J but I still liked him. Maybe it was the way that he spoke to me, or looked in my eyes. He has a personality!

Then Dr. C referred me to Dr. Jason Walton (not his name, but here to protect the innocent). He looked like Dr. Nerd. At first I didn't even like him. I didn't like how he came into the room. He didn't even talk to L, let alone recognize he was even sitting there in the room. He talked rushed and I couldn't barely comprehend what questions he was asking me. I thought, "Oooh do I have to deal with him too?" Then I thought about what Dr. J had said about surgeons, that they are rushed and don't have much of a bedside manner. Keeping that at the back of my mind helped me get through that visit.

Just before my operation was to begin, Dr. C came into check on things. I saw him and waved to him. He smiled at me and shook my hand telling me things would go okay. I had a rush of emotions. I wished that my Dr. J was there but realized I could actually trust Dr. C. He is a really good doctor with great bedside manners. Now, I could see why women fell in love with their OBGYN's.

After my operation, I had heard that Dr. Jason Walton actually talked to L about how things went. I thought "He actually talked?" Are we talking about the same one?

While recovering Dr. Jason Walton came in and actually had a personality. I asked him a question and he didn't act like I was an idiot for asking it. He gave me the answer I wanted to hear and proceeded to tell me not to do certain things and that I would be taking the antibiotic that he prescribed. That's when I didn't want to cross him or argue with him. Then I was quite surprised that he shook hands with both of us on Monday. Just when I started to like him, he said I didn't have to see him anymore.

So just before he left the room I told him "Thank You." He didn't say anything. He just left the room. That was it.

Now I know if it was my Dr. J or Dr. C they probably would have smiled and said "You are welcome. "

Too bad surgeons or specialists can't develop a better bedside manner. If they did, just think about how many referrals they would get and what a booming practice they would have. They may be good in their field but they need to be "people smart" too.

Ready to do more

I am starting to feel much better and am getting bored in the house. So today I did some "light housework." Turned on the dishwasher, washed some pots, picked up the house (while sitting down), threw out my wilted flowers that I got from my brother while in the hospital, and dusted. Ah....now things at least smell good.

I am thinking about making chocolate chip cookies...but don't know if that would be classified as light housework. I sure am hungry for them. I made jello a couple of days ago (as no one did the past 2 1/2 weeks around here).

I have noticed though if I feel the least bit icky to prop my feet up and rest. I am listening to my body and trying to not do too much. Hope I don't over do it. I am still walking carefully and slow.

Busy Monday

Today I went to Wichita to see one of my doctors, one of the surgeons, Dr. Jason Walton (well, no that's not his name) but he looks like him according L. He talked so fast that I didn't quite understand him. I always misunderstand him. He's probably thinking he's dealing with Emily Litella (an old Gilda Radner character on SNL who had trouble hearing). I thought he said "are you driving," and I go "I didn't drive." The word was dry. Then I said, "Oh...well that's different... never mind." (in true Emily Litella fashion). He said that I didn't have to see him any more but to not lift anything for 6 weeks, etc. He was a hard guy to get know but I have a lot of respect for him now and like him a little better.
--------
Then we went to one of the hospitals in Wichita to see our friend B. Instead we ran into D and their daughter A at the hospital cafeteria. So we talked with D and A up to the CICU waiting room. B was resting. He still has a very long road ahead of him. He not only had a heart attack but he also had a stroke!! It is so sad to think that he has gone through so much this past week. He is still in need of prayers. We saw D's son-in-law and her daughter-in-law as well. Such a very nice family!! D's son was back at his school teaching and D's other daughter was in the room with her dad. B is in need of prayer still, don't quit praying for him.
--------
After we left the hospital we ate at Fazoli's (a place where my kids loathe). I don't know why. We rather like it. At least I got to eat spaghetti there. While we were there a little boy was there with his mom and grandma. Also a Sheriff's deputy from Sedgwick County was there. He finished eating and sat down with the family and talked to the little boy, Nathan, was his name. Then he gave Nathan a little sheriff's badge. What a nice gesture talking to this little boy of under five and giving him a badge! The little boy was pleased. I was impressed with the sheriff as I had never seen an officer come up to talk to a child before at any restaurant.
-------
We went to Wally World today and once again I got in my little motorized cart to putter around the store. I saw other people using these vehicles too. Mostly people who walked with a cane, were grossly overweight, or just generally looking poorly. Me? I am nearly three weeks out of major surgery. So I still move pretty slow and cannot push a grocery cart. So I shopped with L around the store and getting pretty good with the cart. That is until I got to the women's department. I got a little to close to the shelves and my car wouldn't move. So like the go-getter that I am, I scoot the cart back with my leg. Duh...this is the area that I am trying to heal from....duh! Then there is a wal-mart associate watching what I am doing and yet she doesn't do squat to help me get untangled from the shelves. WHATEVER!! I just want to scream at her...HELP ME I am INJURED...if you don't do something I will sue you, etc. What is with some of those people? Well, then I had to wait on L to search through his cars and I take off looking at the Christimas items. I get to an aisle and bam, the cart stops. Then I started it up again and it went 2 feet and stops. I'm thinking where's L??? Who can I call on my cell to get some help. Of course there is no Wal-Mart associate in sight.

So finally I somehow got it started again. L meanwhile is in another aisle looking for me. I flag him down. Finally a Wal-Mart associate sees me and says she will get another cart. She tells this one man to get another cart for me. So I am waiting for like five minutes and he brings me a push cart, no motorized one. Well....that wasn't going to help me. FINE...I can just walk. Walk slow and it hurts too. Walked over to pharmacy and my med was NOT ready, then over to check out and the bathroom, back to the pharmacy. Resting on a bench until the med is ready and finally leaving the store.

I was exhausted!! I think I need some caffeine, a long hot shower, or a long nap right about now. What a day!

KU Football Beats K-State in Manhattan!!

I am a big KU fan! My favorite team are the KU Men's Basketball team. I just live and breathe KU basketball from October until April (or so). But today, the KU football team led by quarterback, Todd Reissing beat the K-State Wildcats! WOW!

Now, normally I don't watch very much football on television or anywhere. It just isn't my game. But when I was an 18 year old student at Juco thirty-four years ago, I HAD to watch football. Well, actually I kind of liked it, emphasize "kind of." I thought I would be pretty good at play-by-play on our student radio station. Afterall, I had watched the NY Jets and Joe Namath, the KC Chiefs and Lenny Dawson, and the Baltimore Colts and Johnny Unitas play on television in my "youth." And I had played "rag-tag" football as a girl in my neighborhood. Yep, I thought I knew my football pretty well back then.

I can remember this guy, who was going to call the game with me was impressed. He always advertised on his show that I was the "first woman announcer" to actually do play-by-play for a football game. I was thinking yes, I know sports I can do this. Well, that night of the game, we were playing another Juco, called the Highland Scotties. I get in there and duh! I know NOTHING! I just sit there not talking much, not knowing diddly-squat! A lot of dead air. It was AWFUL....I was awful. That was my first and last football game I ever called.

It wasn't much better with basketball (according to my co-announcers, all guys). I got excited calling a basketball game. I couldn't contain myself. I knew the players too well, as I went to school with them. The other guys, Galen, the sports director said "You can't get excited while calling a game." These were the days before anyone heard of the team of Bob Davis and Max Falkenstein. It just wasn't done that way. Now, I look back on those days and laugh, wondering if Galen has ever listened to any KU basketball broadcast. The announcers are far from laid back. If you were that dull no one would listen to you.

But getting back to the Jayhawks over the Wildcats today it was fun just watching KU beat K-State. And this time I actually knew what I was talking about when I explained and discussed the football game to my son.

Some things do change!

ROCK CHALK JAYHAWKS!!

Feelin' stronger everyday

I still walk like an old lady at times, but other times I feel pretty good.

I walked nearly 2 whole blocks today! Thank you, no applause needed. I felt pretty good about that. Then I did do a little picking up of the house. Some things just get to me while laying on the couch watching TV and videos. I can't run the vacuum until after Halloween or pick up anything that weighs 20 pounds (sorry Sasha). I could do light loads of laundry.

What I wish my family would do is please make me some jello. If they would just boil the water, I could do it, it's not THAT hard. Also I am having some cravings for spaghetti. But, today is homecoming at the HS so I doubt I will get any of these two food until tomorrow or Sunday.

Our friend B is doing really well!! He is being transferred to another hospital in Wichita. Hopefully L and I will see him on Monday after my Doc's appointment that morning.

Thanks for the prayers for B and me. B has a long road ahead. My road is short.

Reading another blog...

I found out that on September 19th (my surgery day) that it was: "International Talk Like a Pirate Day."

Upon reading this in "the reformed angler blog," I couldn't believe my eyes!! When I was being wheeled into the operating room the nurse/intern guy was telling me or others that it was indeed "Pirate Day." Well, naturally I thought this guy was joking and was trying to get me to relax about the surgery. So here I was going "Arrr," into the operating room.

So that was really true...September 19th was Pirate Day!!

Thanks to the "reformed angler blogger" (one of my ex-college teachers) who wrote about this event. I would have never known! ;)

Two weeks after surgery

Two weeks after having major surgery I am doing well.

I am not doing well enough to go back to work. I cannot walk very far or fast. An old person of ninety plus could probably win a race with me and have a lot more stamina. But I am better than a day out of surgery. It was hard for me to pick up my feet and actually walk down a hall. I was lucky that I could walk two doors down. Now I can go outside and walk around the backyard but have to be careful not to step in a hole or dog poop. So usually I walk the street in front of my driveway. Yesterday, I think actually I picked up my pace. I do get a "stitch" in my side from the incision.

I do have some annoyances since surgery. My skin is constantly itching. Okay, I won't tell about the TMI stuff, but I have rashes on my legs as well. Cortaid does wonders on my red skin patches. I hate my allergies to whatever it is that's bothering me. I just wish I wasn't allergic to any ingredients in my treatment.

I do feel better now than before the surgery in a couple of certain areas.

Now I can't drive for another 4 weeks anywhere. I can't go grocery shopping or shopping of any kind, anything that makes me stand for a long time or on my feet for a long time. I have gotten on the automatic carts at the Wal-Mart and I get these looks from people who think "what's wrong with you?" I think I should offer to show them my incision then maybe they would understand.

For boredum, I have been looking at my scrapbook for S; watching a lot of TV; on the computer again; reading; and sleeping.

At least I will be getting out for doctor appointments and even a teacher conference with J's teacher.

I'll bet when I am healed that I will miss this time of doing absolutely nothing. I better enjoy it while I can. :)

Continue to pray for my friend B

I have been in prayer for my friend B and their family ever since I heard the devasting news that he had suffered from a heart attack.

I have heard that B went without oxygen for longer than needed and that he has obstacles to overcome. Medical obstacles that look impossible to man, but not impossible to God.

I have prayed that God restore B to his old self, that God would do a miracle in B's life. God is in the "Miracle Business." What seems like the impossible to us to overcome, it is possible through God to be restored. He would be a "living miracle." However, if B was not to be restored then I would not stop believing in God, but have belief that God needed him more in His Kingdom than here on earth. B is a man of God. He has a strong belief and if this is his time to go then I would believe God would see B as ready.

However, I do believe that God can restore B because God does the best work.

I just can't believe that two weeks ago tomorrow that B and D were praying for me to do well through surgery and calming my fears. And now, B is not doing well in critical condition, and is in the hospital himself.

I do believe in prayer and I do believe in God in whatever he decides for B. Please continue to pray for B and D.
