Telemarketers and Caller ID

I am so glad that I have Caller ID on my telephone. It helps me weed out who really wants me and what telemarketer is calling. If the call is Unknown name chances are I will never answer it. People may be in the house wondering why I don't pick up my telephone everytime it rings, but that's our policy don't pick up the phone when telemarketers call. I also can turn in these people on the "National Do Not Call" registry. I don't know if it does any good but at least it gives me piece of mind to know that I have power! Also I check on a site called "Who Called us," to see how many other people registered that number and what they have found out who was calling. It could be anyone, a credit card offer; buying siding; or any of the plethora of things that a telemarketer is into.

Lately I have been receiving calls from area code 405...which is an Oklahoma City Area Code. I am constantly getting these calls at least 2 or 3 times a day. Well, I decide to go ahead an answer this call, maybe they will stop calling (is my thinking).

So I go, "Hullo," (not my usual voice). The person on the line comes on a second later. By this time I'm thinking it's a recording. "Hello," says the perky telemarketer, "Whom I speaking with?" With this I answer, "Why?" The perky telemarketer says, "Could I speak with Ms. B?"
Again I take a deep breath and say, "Why?" She becomes a little rattled and says, "Is this Ms. B?" Then I uttered, "Why?" She gets a little more rattled, "This is the Democratic Party calling." I perk up and said, "Oh?!" The telemarketer laughs and little and then goes into her speech. Well, now that I knew who was calling why should I be subject to the telemarketer speech. With that I hung up. I just wanted to say to them please don't call me again. I reported the number as I do not like telemarketers regardless of the service!

"Don't call us, we'll call you." (I think this must be the motto of all telemarketers!)

Recognizing faces

Yesterday I went up to Wichita with "h" to take his parents to the Clinic. It was like driving clear out to Andover!

Anyway, upon getting there we left "h's" parents off to check in while we parked the car. We walked in and "h's" dad was having a little confusion. "H's" dad is in his 90's. So this very nice woman who was working behind the desk helps "H's" parents to the second floor. I look over at this woman and think, "Hey I've seen her before." I check her name tag and just know it is her!
She was very, very kind to "H's" parents. When she was about to leave I say, "Have you spoke at "KMC?" (Because that's where I saw her before.). She smiled and shook my hand and said, "Yes." This woman, "R. M." is a wonderful, passionate speaker she knows her Bible well. She was a missionary from South America, Brazil, to be exact. She had trouble with immigration and she also had some medical problems. She told us that she had been working at the Clinic for about a month and that was helping pay for her medical bills.

I told her we weren't going to KMC no longer but back to PV. I hope to hear her speak again somewhere. I am planning on talking to my Pastor about getting her as a guest speaker. I think that she is really blessed by the Holy Spirit. It's a shame that she has to work at the Clinic. She would be really great if she became a pastor.

Weather and wellness

I am hoping that the weather holds out this week. I read that it was going to be warm tomorrow then on Thursday cold at 46 degrees. Burzees! I am hoping that I keep well too so I can go to "S 's" Spelling Bee. I know that the flu is going around. I hate that time of year. I guess I need to get plenty of rest, eat sensibly, wash my hands frequently, disinfect like crazy at church, and basically stay away from sick people. Sounds impossible, doesn't it?

Well, it's impossible for me to take the flu shot. I wish I could take it and I would if only I didn't have an egg allergy. People who are allergic to eggs have to be careful when taking certain vaccinations. I think that the MMR vaccine is incubated in egg protein as well. When I was growing up I didn't take the MMR shot. It was either that it had not been developed yet or because of my allergy. I got the measles so many times in my life! My mother said the first time I caught measles was when I was a few weeks old. Then I remember when I was in 4th grade I had the measles for two weeks....I was out THAT long! Then the last time I had the measles was when I was at the ripe old age of 16! Oh yeah, I do believe in getting vaccinations! I made sure my children got everything and anything that had a vaccination (with the exception of the flu shot).

What would happen if EVERYONE who didn't have an allergy to eggs did take the flu shot? Would that help keep the population from even developing the flu virus? I wonder.

SOLD!

I went to my first auction tonight. Anyway, the first one that I've ever remembered going to. The auction was for a mission offering at church. Gosh, to understand what you're bidding for and for how much is kind of scary. The auctioneer had such a great personality!! It really made the auction go fast and was fun. We all had a great time biding and finding the history behind the items.

There were church fans (which I kind of wanted), breads, jellies, trees, wicker furniture, a crazy quilt, a Yahtzee game, a stuffed bunny, popcorn, stitched towels, baby quilts, candles, and other interesting items. I really wanted this wall hanging made by a lady in our church, but I couldn't afford it. It was beautiful and I thought it would go for a lot more money than it sold for. I ended up bidding on and getting two cookbooks. They were made in 1978 and 1983. There was old advertising from my little town. One page had advertising (in 1983) and those business are no longer running. I remembered when I first moved down here, where each of these stores/restaurants were, and now they are gone, but that's been nearly 20 years ago! Anyway, I could afford these two little books as I collect cookbooks from all over.

The weather was beautiful this morning then it just dropped 20 degrees and windy. We were driving back to my little town and hit a large Texas Christmas tree! (a tumbleweed). Forecast is now for a possibility of snow! Ugh! Let's all hope for a major meltdown in the next two days.

Spring has sprung!

I saw my first two robins today. We had especially warm, windy weather today. I looked around my yard and saw my crocus popping out of the ground. Also saw some other little plants and even before today I saw those dreaded weeds, the ones that produces those annoying stickers, or burrs. Tonight I am hearing the rumble of thunder and the flash of lightening.
Spring is not one of my favorite time of the year. I like seeing birds, plants, green grass, and eventually leaves on the trees, but between allergies and severe weather, I could do without those things.

I hear the winds blowing outside. I think I'll go downstairs. It's much safer down there during this season.

Panic attacks and driving

I suffer from panic attacks. No joke. I live in a small town and only drive around in my town. But when I have to go to the dentist (8 miles away) or out to the high school (5 miles away), I start to freeze up. Even thinking about it worries me. I chew my nails and hope and pray that I can make it to my destination. My "h" takes me everywhere out of town. It truly is a handicap to have these feelings of being afraid.

Many years ago when I was single I could drive ANYWHERE without any fear. I would drive out to see friends in 100 miles away and into Oklahoma. Never had a fear of driving. It was easy.

But now for some unknown reason, I just can't get in the car and drive down the highway without feeling like gripping the steering wheel until my knuckles turn white and my hands are sweaty. I drive so slow on the highway. I worry about people who get behind me and want to pass me. I can drive on dirt backroads without too much problem. There is no one out there and so I mostly drive on backroads. Then of course I worry if it will rain and my car will get stuck or slide all over the place.

I even used to have panic attacks while on vacation. I felt like I was going to get sick. But in the last few years I have been able to get over the panic thoughts of riding in a car. I have many tricks to help me not "go crazy," while riding in the car.

Now I find out next week that I must go out to the high school as the bee was cancelled this week to next week. My "h" will be out of town and so I will have to drive out there. I pray that it won't snow or rain before that time, as I will be taking my backroads.

I wish I could drive like I could when I was younger. I wish that I never had panic attacks!

The Ripple Effect

Yesterday the high school had a power outage which caused the County Spelling Bee to be cancelled for today. Now the bee will be held a week from today. So now d will have to study that much more!! Hopefully she will be really ready next week!

Now in d's 8th grade Social Studies class they are needing to make a quilt block for a school quilt. The problem is that I do not sew at all. I had to take it in junior high many years ago when I was 13 but the only thing that I was good at in that class was taking out my stitches. Why do people assume that all women can sew? If I have a ripped seem I usually go to my inlaws, find a friend, or go up to my mom's house which is a few miles away. I can do simple things like cross-stitch (printed only), make a stuffed pillow, and sew badges on a vest, but that's it. In junior high I had a very, very patient teacher and she knew that sewing wasn't my thing. My mom can't even quilt. So I've passed my "skill" of can't sewing onto " d". It's the ripple effect.

I asked "d" how she felt about getting an F for the project. That didn't go over so well. So I tracked someone in town to help "d." She has taught "d" how to cut quilt squares and to operate a sewing machine. She has great patience! "D" now knows why I do not like sewing...the ripple effect.

Is there anything that you are passing onto your kids? I have a love for animals. So do my kids. Look for the ripple effect in your lives. Do you see it? :)
