A New Question

Yesterday we were doing some work for the inlaws by fixing their old fence. We own post hole diggers but we had left them at my mom's house after our van was totaled in that town. So we thought why not go to the WIFS, since they have a rental equipment.

We ask the owner if he has post hole diggers. Yep, they had several ones, electric ones and the "regular" manual kind. Then he asks, "How many holes are you going to dig?" Sheesh!! Does he have to know EVERYTHING?! L answers, "One." The owner said, "Well, that will be hardly worth it." We roll our eyes. The sign in the store calls this rental "Just Ask." And I'm thinking DON'T ASK! But they do anyway. What's it for/how many holes store.

Maybe when we were in our mid thirties we could have done without those post hole diggers, just to dig one hole. But being in our mid fifties, I don't think so. That's pretty hard work now.

What's the purpose of this rental place to ask what we are using it for and how many holes? How deep and how wide will the hole be? What are you burying in the hole: the Riverfest medalian; or a time capsule; or important house papers? Surely, you don't need these post hole diggers! We don't want to take $5.00 a day from you to rent these fine pair of diggers. Get you a shovel and dig your one hole.

Oh to live in a town that would have actual competitive hardware/rental stores! No we just have this one, WIFS.

Things happen...

Today S told me that her favorite teacher was quitting. She was sad to say the least. She was devastated to say the most. She learned a lot about Debate/Forensics her past two years at the HS. He encouraged students to strive to do their best. He could tell them how to improve their arguement (in the case of Debate) and how to improve their Forensic piece. As a parent of a student, I found him easy to talk to and encouraging. It is rare to find a teacher who cared about students like Mr. H did.

We had plenty of rain yesterday. It was a gully washer; a monsoon. We had at least 6 inches of rain hit our town. The hospital and the school were sand bagged. Streets flooded and cars were undriveable in some cases. We were traveling back on US 160 when we tuned into the "weather authority," on the radio talking about the big t-storm near Danville. We were headed right for that area!!! The sky was eerily a dark indigo blue. We looked toward the north and it was even darker there and there were reports of tornados in the Wichita area. Sheets of rain poured down. We had just bought KFC and stopped at our church to eat our supper. The rain seemingly wouldn't stop! By morning however, the water had disappeared around the streets and school wasn't called.

Our usual spots in the church flooded. Then another person's basement had water damage. We also had a friend of S's stay overnight. She didn't want to drive home, which I could perfectly understand!

Tonight, I just barely remembered that J has a singing concert tonight. J says, "I have to be out at school by 6:45..." The reaction, was WHAT?? I sighed and have to get things together by then. Next week, there is the annual Band BBQ. It will be nice to see the MS/HS band play next week.

I must be in a Thunderstorm

You know the old saying "When it rains, it pours," referring to bills and the like. Well, I must be in a thunderstorm.

After having paying $4K on a CAT scan now I am told by my dentist that I could need a crown. Of course, I questioned about how much would that cost. It is 300 short of a $1,000! Sheesh! Who has that kind of cash lying around? Not I, said the cat!

So of course I am also looking at the possibility of a root canal (hopefully not) of another tooth, which by the way, would be another crown cost. I have been told actually I needed at least 3 other crowns. I have to put off dental work in order to pay all my other doctor bills.

The cost of health care is skyrocketing!! There should be a cap on how much a doctor/dentist can charge. Like $500 is more reasonable for a crown, and if you have insurance that would only cost $250. Or a CAT scan, if needed, should be told to a patient how much it will cost, before they fork out their life savings and then some on that procedure.

My advice...is take care of what you have. Marry a rich doctor/dentist or rich anyone. Because only these types of people can afford these procedures. These procedures used to be affordable, but not anymore.

I would like to get out of the "Thunderstorm," and into some sunny days.

CJ and Xavier Henry from Oklahoma has signed with the KU Jayhawks. They were planning to play at Memphis. Can you spell "contender," for the KU Basketball team?

Sometimes my wrecked up finger feels good and other times it just doesn't. I have an ice pack on the computer table so I can give my finger tip a shot of cold. I don't know what I did, or what bit me. I know that thankfully, it wasn't a spider. The downside is that it's an infection and I'm taking antibiotics (elephant pills) to get rid of it. I have a hard time gripping stuff and am afraid of bumping the bad side, because I have. It hurts A LOT then.

I went out and mowed yesterday. Usually I have a riding lawn mower and I don't have to worry about my shoes. Well, yesterday, the weeds looked so bad that I just went out there with my old jeans and used the push mower. Today I look at my green shoes and think, now I'll have to get better tennis shoes. These shoes look great for Earth Day or St. Patrick's Day!

When Things Happen

It used to be when children would cry during worship service, people would give the parents "the eye," as if to say, "Shhh!! I'm trying to listen to the service or the prayer." Now when children cry out everyone smiles or chuckles. Now in this day and age then new "Shh! I'm trying to listen" applies to the cell phone going off in church.

While I was listening to the prayer today, I heard a cell phone go off in it's blinging style. Granted it wasn't an annoying song, but an attention alert like a fairy had just performed an act. A tinkerbell sound. Eyes came upon me. I dared not look at them. As it was MY cell phone that was going off.

I usually do have my cell phone turned on, but I wasn't expecting a text response to the person whom I texted just before service started. In fact I thought I put it on vibrate. Guess again.

So in order to prevent any more unexpected text messaging, I decided to turn the phone off. I just should have waited! As when I powered the phone off, it sounded a loud musical piece that I was turning it off. I quickly put my hands over it, as to "shut it up."

Talk about embarrassing! Next time I won't text on Sunday morning, especially before worship and I won't power down during a prayer!

It's that season again!

It is either allergy season or cold season. I hate this time of year. Sneezing and wheezing because of wet leafs or house dust only to not being able to sleep at night.

Last night I took a Claritan and later on a Motrin. Claritan wasn't doing its job. What I am needing is a decongestant. But since I have high blood pressure the doctor would prefer if I didn't go that route. So I put on my breathe right strip, as instructed on the package and go to sleep.

1 hour later, I am having such a hard time breathing despite propping up with 4 pillows. I get up out of bed and lay on the couch watching old reruns of the Pyramid and Password. I drift off to sleep 2 hours later and watch an infomercial with Billy Dee Williams promoting recording artists from Motown. I like this music and start waking up a little. I tell myself that I need to stop watching this and get some serious rest.

An hour later I hear voices, it's Steve Urkel from yet another rerun. I get up and drink water, trying to keep hydrated. I look at the time and watch Kansas Today show. By this time S is up moving around wondering why I am on the couch. I felt like saying, "Oh I'm just pulling an all-nighter for old time sakes."

I get a few winks in before breakfast. After taking J to school, here I sit...on the computer able to breathe a little better but not well enough to go to the dentist. I would be tipped on my head and would be urged to breathe through my nose. Ha! There's a concept! If I only had a nose that would allow me to breathe then maybe I would have got some needed rest.

I should have stocked my medicine cabinet full of Zrytec and have a cool mist humidfier. That would help me to breathe so much better. I can't wait for allergy/cold season to end. Hopefully, it will end soon like today!

Bold moves vs. shyness

Sometimes for unknown reasons, a feeling of shyness overcomes me. I always tell people that I am shy and they laugh saying, "You? Oh sure."

But often times I do suffer from shyness. When growing up, I barely answered questions in class, even though I knew the answers. I was shy. I can remember taking a journalism class in junior college. My assignment was ask the registrar about how many people we had attending class at that particular time. That was it. A seemingly easy task. I remember distinctly that I was sweating and walking into the office. I just couldn't do it. So I quit taking Journalism right then and there.

Other times I was bold. I could ask this one basketball player for an interview on the radio and he actually said yes. He was a nice guy. I was bold but yet, after listening to the tape that I did with him, I sounded so shaky.

After junior college, I made a bold move to attend Sterling College, a Christian college. It was bold for me, because I knew "no one" on campus. My friends from HS didn't go to a private Christian college, I knew no one! But yet, I had friends that broke me out of my silent mode. Sometimes, I did feel like I was their shadow and stood behind them. I watched and learned how not be shy.

After moving to Wichita, yet another bold move, I knew no one who lived there. But there again I had made friends who were out going individuals and I picked up some of their traits.

I think that sometimes I have bouts of shyness because I don't like confrontation. Or I have my own ideas about certain jobs that I've been given a chance to change things. Then I get calls from people who used to hold those jobs and wonder if I am doing what they did. I don't want to say to them, "Hey, thank you but this is my job now. I'm doing the job according to how I think it should be done." (Which I haven't had time to do much, with other responsibilities.). I guess what I need to do with this particular job (or duty, in this case) is make a bold move and make some changes.

I just need a booster shot of confidence that my ideas are good and not to worry what others think. Then maybe I can get past my shyness, maybe.

The Questionaire

Yesterday in the mail I received a questionaire from the United States District Court of Kansas. My reacation was, "great, do I have to serve?" Thoughts of getting out of fillng this form out passed through my brain.

They gave me the option instead of filling it out online! Oh joy! I don't know about most of you, but when I see the words "jury notice," I go into a cold sweat. I have been on a jury nearly twice. Once in Wichita I was on a jury and then in Anthony when I first moved down here I was picked. But thankfully the trial was called off. Thankfully for me anyway. Those were the days where I knew of no one except the pastor of the Mennonite Church and he was going to serve on the jury with me. Some people love to do this and feel like its their "civic duty," to serve. I find it as a pain and try with all my might to get out of this. I think only once L was called, but I think he knew the different parties involved and couldn't serve. Lucky.

Looking through the form, the exemptions were: working for a public office, a member of the police department or a volunteer fire department (kenny, you need any lady fire fighters?), and a member of the armed forces. I was constantly asked if I was a member of the clergy. I pondered that question. Could I say I work with the clergy and therefore I am...or that I merely "work with the clergy by being the custodian of a church," would this get me by?? I truthfully said, "No I did not work for the clergy." But I have to admit, my beliefs are strong when it comes to the death penalty, then again depending on the crime.

Other exceptions included: being over the age of 70 (I will be looking forward to that age in about 16 years); taking care of and having custody of children under 10 (flute, here's you chance for a vacation, I can watch over K2 and 3); is it too late for me to become an attorney, physician, dentist, or a registered nurse? Could being a member of the Mennonite Church be called a "religious order?"

I also will be reading the newspapers a little more carefully and form an opinion quickly. You always hear about the heinous crimes in district court or the length of the trial. I do have a fear of driving to the big city, would that exempt me? Probably not.

If serving in District Court would provide a substanial fee to serve, then most likely more people would serve. But unfortunately, they do not. I have heard of people serving as a jurror many times in their lives and enjoy that. I just wish I knew where they lived. They can have my spot!
