Well the new year's celebration is tonight. We reflect on what has happened during this year and look forward to next year. Was 2007 good for everyone? What would you change? What would you keep the same? What would you improve? These are all things to think about each time you start a New Year. Maybe you could think about this everyday. You think okay what did I mess up today and how can I change and improve things. Think about it.
------
For New Year's Eve celebration we make our potato skins (not at all close to how TGI Friday's taste), and we make pizza (again we don't make the expectations of Pizza Hut). Then we usually watch TV and pull fireworks at night, scaring the dog, the cat, and J. When I was younger my parents would never celebrate it with me. It was just another day. My parents wouldn't stay up either. And they were younger than what I am now! So I would ask my mom to get me some pizza rolls and buy me some 7 up. Then I would go downstairs and play some records and turn on the old color wheel (that belonged to our old silver Christmas tree) and turn off the lights. That was my celebration. It wasn't much but it was something. S complains that ours is boring....well if she lived my life she would think this would be exciting!! Usually every year I would have a cold. I have one sort of this year. Some things never change. One time I worked as a baby sitter and brought a friend over. I had to leave early because I felt cruddy. So she finished up my job and after that night she was the one they called to babysit instead of me. Oh well...I got over it. But I still remember it.
-------
Another new year's celebration was back before I met L. There were the 5 of us. I was with my date, my friend with her date, and the guy that our dates worked with. Actually we all worked at the same place. We were with Ma Bell and they were the computer techs, far from being nerdy at all. That was nearly 25 years ago and since that time my friend has died and her boyfriend/common law husband does computer work (I think) and my date never married. I was glad that the relationship never worked out. It wasn't meant to be. I am sooooo happy now with L, my hubby of nearly 20 years!
-----
Then I can remember one New Year's day with news that my uncle had died. He was watching the Rose Bowl parade and died of a heart attack. That was 40 years ago and now I am the same age as he was. That was the saddest New Year that we ever had. But the best New Years was when my nephew, D, was born 32 years ago.
------
So make your New Years eve a great celebration. Be happy that you have good health, good friends, and are alive. It's up to you to make your New Year really great!!
Have a Happy 2008!!

Back from the KU BB game!
Just got back tonight from the northeastern part of the state. It was a long two days. I wrote in my notebook several "mini blogs." Mostly because I couldn't sleep last night and secondly because it was so exciting to be at the game.
We ate at our favorite place in Larrytown the ----Horn Steakhouse. Then we checked into our hotel and drove around on Mass Street and around the campus. We watched families sled down the hills of KU. Then we went to the Booth Athletic Hall of Fame. We thought for sure we could slip out of the Hall of Fame, open a door and wait inside before the game. Nope. Didn't happen. So we waited outside for at least an hour. It was so cold!! We were hoping SOMEONE would take pity on us and open a door. No they did not. We just wanted to wait inside the lobby like we did the past two times. We hopped to keep warm and were the only 4 people in line. The other ones went to another door and thought we had the wrong door.
While waiting I was stretching my right leg and started to get THE WORST FOOT CRAMP known in my existence. I usually get these if I've been out in the cold for a while (usually get them swimming in extremely cold water). It felt like my foot was crossing. I took off my shoe and my sock and started massaging it. L suggested that I put the sock back on to keep it warm (not because it stunk!). He told me to walk on it. I walked all around the area we were waiting and I even saw Cole Aldrich walking around. We did see Brady Morningstar and Sherron Collins come to the arena. Sherron pitched a snowball in Brady's direction playfully.
Finally the door opened at 4:30 and we could at least wait inside for one hour. (My Feet are so tired!!). While waiting inside I was feeling sort of icky and I kept thinking what would happen if I would get sick right there!! Maybe it was just butterflies, I don't know. Soon the feeling went away when we got inside to watch KU play. Our seats were better than the last time. We got to see Bill coach his team.
Afterwards (KU beat Yale by 33 points) we lined up for autographs and I mean EVERYONE was there. So we went to the end of the tunnel entrance and was told to move down the hall. We thought oh surely they wouldn't come down THIS far. Well they did. It turns out that being down there was one of the BEST spots we could be in.
We waited for autographs and pictures of the athletes for 1 hour after the game.
By the time we got back to the hotel my feet were so sore. But it was worth every minute just to talk to the players and see them.

LarryTown Basketball!
We are packing our bags to drive up the turnpike tomorrow. Strategically planning where the best seat is in General Admission. S would say the best seat is in the student section near the goal. I would say the best seat would be behind the bench, or pretty near that area. Planning to have lunch at the Long---- and not at a turnpike McDonald's or Flying J.
At the game get our pizza and pop and think about getting popcorn at the half. Cheering our lungs out for our favorite players and watching dunks made by Sasha Kaun and Darnell Jackson. Hearing the crowd cheer loudly for Brandon Rush and Sherron Collins. The courtside announcer shout, "From New York" and the crowd in response answer "NEW YORK!!" for Russell Robinson. When they do the commercials for Gatorade and ask "Gatorade is it in you?" The crowd responding a resounding "NO!!!" Hearing the national anthem, the alma mater song "Hail to Old KU." Then the daunting "Rock Chalk" chant. The Big Jay and the Baby Jay, the flag coming out of the tunnell and the players running out of the tunnell.
Cheering for the players making great players and cheering with the student section. Listening to the band play to get you in the mood, if you are not already.
WOW!! (as Dave Armstrong would say). It is "wow!" The half time show, the half time rush to the bathrooms (LOL!) and to the concession stands. Then the end of the game. Rushing downstairs to find a good spot to meet the players for autographs and pictures.
It's hard to settle down once you get back to the hotel. But of course, you can watch a replay of the game on Channel 6.
Maybe some day we can take one of S's friends up there and J's friend, K1. We'd have a great time!

Between Holidays
It's after Christmas and before New Years. We are now playing with our "new" toys. We are trying out our new gadgets. S tried out my new cookie scoop and likes it. I have yet to try the brand new rolling pin (aka Husband beater) on any dough, I don't use it on the husband! We played the DVD version of "Family Feud," and we are confused by the instructions. We have yet to try the Scene It versions of the 2nd edition Movies and Harry Potter versions (this was for S as I have not read any of those books!). We continue to look for triple A batteries as it is not in the local grocery store.
I received a gift card and looked through the store to see what I would like. It's funny when you don't have a gift card or money you can think of a lot of items to buy but when you DO have it you can't think of a one. Perhaps it is the time of season. I should be looking beyond winter and think what little item that I am wanting to have in the spring/summer. Hmmm!! I can smell the barbeque now...perhaps we will get that. Thankfully there is no expiration dates on this particular store.
In three more days we will be up at Larry town to see our Jayhawks play. That is a pretty good present to have each year to have tickets to the basketball game. We are planning to eat at a good restaurant while we are there, our favorite one. Then we will be doing our after Christmas/New Year's shopping in Capital City. Hopefully the weather will give us a break this weekend and we will have clear roads.

Merry Christmas
As I write this blog, Christmas stockings are filled; children are sleeping; L and and the grandparent are sleeping too. S has written her Christmas letter to "Claus," and "he" has answered.
What? You're thinking, she still writes to Claus? Yep, it's one of our traditions. Each Christmas Eve, "Santa," gets not only his treats but a Christmas letter just to keep the old guy up on things and also to answer very many questions. This year, however, the tradition was just about to end. But S did it anyway.
Thinking back on the traditions of what I did as a child and what my children do are nearly the same. When I was a child I begged my parents relentlessly to please open a present. Actually, it was my brother who did this. Some of his friends got him started on this tradition. Then my Santa never wrapped presents. Each morning we had to wait on my parents, while they turned on the lights and watched us run out to see our presents. I can remember the red, blue, and orange bulbs that glistened in our tree each morning. I would always hang my stocking on one of the doorhandles in the living room. I would always get chocolate marshmallow santas (and could eat all 12 of them that very day!!). The day before Christmas we would drive around the Salt City and look at the neighbors Christmas lights.
In our family we let the kids open packages from their aunt and uncle from the northwest and we go to Christmas Eve services. We look at the Christmas lights and Christmas Eve night we watch a movie. Then they write their Claus letter. When they were younger we used to tape them running down the hall. Now, since they are older, they still want us to get up early just to unwrap their packages. I wouldn't miss it. I usually hide their stockings until we are ready to make an early morning appearance. I can't stand it when they peak in their stockings before I get to see the look on their faces.
Many things have changed from growing up until now. I imagine that they will be starting new traditions with their own families as well in the future.
Have a very Merry Christmas my fellow bloggers!

The Salt City/Changing tradition
I went to the "Salt City" today and haven't been there since after Thanksgiving. Since that time the "city" endured a powerful ice storm. I had heard that many people were without power for quite a long time.
I went to my old neighborhood and couldn't believe all the limbs that were down. Someone said that it looked like a war zone. It looked like a tornado had been through that area as well. Every lawn in that neighborhood had major limbs down! At my parents' house the two trees in front looked so bad! The folks had had these trees for 51 years! Big huge limbs hung down from the trees. Then in the back yard, two major limbs blocked the entrance for my parent to go into the garage. Also that brought the electric line from the house to the garage down. It was a mess in the backyard futher down the yard. My parent one of those old black gas lights (that was popular in the 60's) and it was crushed!
It was sad to see all of the destruction caused by the ice storm. We had the same problem in this town 3 years back but I don't remember it being THAT bad.
Thankfully my parent will receive some assistance in getting the limbs cleared away. What a mess!
----
This year we are doing something different. We are having Christmas Eve dinner or lunch. Because of L's schedule and our own, we decided to eat a day early and take my parent back on Christmas. We had no other way to do it. So now I have confused everyone. I thought I had told the inlaws that we would have dinner on Christmas Eve and they thought it was going to be on "Blizzard Saturday." Then there was a question on when we would do the gift exchange. Well, I said we would do that the same, but just have the dinner a day earlier. I'm not sure if this will go over too big with everyone. I told them if we would need something to add to the dinner then at least the stores would be open to get it. We probably wouldn't have to do this next year as Christmas will be on a Thursday. I think this is a one time deal only. And my family will be thankful for knowing that bit of trivia. :)

KU Basketball 12---0/Blizzard!
Sasha Kaun and Darnell Jackson are congratulating each other for a great play during the game on Saturday, Dec. 22nd. Hope that K1 and his g-pa had a great day of it there. I hope that they are able to drive back home this evening despite the weather!!On the KU game, they beat their opponent, Miami (of Ohio) 78--54. The Miami team had a 44 game streak where their opponent was held to under 70 points. The Jayhawks only turned the ball over 6 times in the contest. Leading scorers were Darrell Arthur and Darnell Jackson each with 14 points, followed by Brandon Rush and Mario Chalmers with 10 a piece. Contributing to the win were: Sherron Collins (coming off of the bench) with 8 points, Sasha Kaun with 5 points, Cole Aldrich with 4 points, scoring 3 points were Russell Robinson, Conner Teahan, and Brennan Bechard (all of these were 3 pointers), and rounding out the scoring was Rodrick Stewart with 2. It was a good game. But the television was horrible to watch. The picture would keep breaking up and would flash. UGH!! And then they would have captions on...WHY? Who knows why? I could hear the announcers, if I wanted to, but I chose instead to listen to the radio because I would miss some plays if I didn't. As many times as it flashed off and on, it was nearly impossible to watch the game.
Yes, it's great to go to the game in person. I hope that K1 had fun and got some autographs.

Blizzard....it looked as if the forecasters got it wrong today and we thought about going to H town. Ha! They got it right and then some. It started out spitting snowflakes and I thought well maybe not H town maybe A town. Not even that town. We went out to work and by the time we finished, it was a full blown blizzard. We couldn't see anyway across the highway. Couldn't see the Pastor house from the church at all. It was a mess. Finally it cleared up some and we went back to church. There were drifts up to 2 feet!! I wonder if we will have church tomorrow? We might if RV comes and cleans the rest of it off. However, I don't see the old people coming. I've never seen it that bad here in quite a while. Now, I hope this snow is through until whenever!!
PS...Santa I need new boots!
